Nebraska Athletics to Host HuskHers Brunch

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Nebraska Athletics is hosting the inaugural HuskHers Brunch on Wednesday, Feb. 1st.

This event will celebrate female athletes, staff and leaders in the community that support women's excellence in athletics, business and life. Before Title IX, intercollegiate athletics for women were abolished by the Board of Regents in 1908. During this period, women were only allowed to compete in sports during physical education classes. On June 23, 1972, Title IX was enacted by the Congress, prohibiting sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving any type of federal financial aid. The 1975-76 season was the first official year of Husker women's athletics and since then, Nebraska has set a standard of success for female sports.

On Wednesday, President and CEO of North End Teleservices, Carmen Tapio, will be the keynote speaker for the event that is celebrating both Title IX and National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Carmen Tapio is the founder of five successful businesses and is a nationally recognized entrepreneur, community and business leader. Her business, North End Teleservices, is the largest African American owned business in the state of Nebraska and has been on the Inc. Magazine 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies for three consecutive years.

Additionally, Jessica Coody will serve as the emcee for the event and the female coaches and student-athlete panels. The coaches panel will feature associate and head coaches Mindy Miles (rifle), Rhonda Revelle (softball), Amy Williams (basketball), Jeanne Sutherland (golf) and Lisa Hart (tennis). Student-athletes Lindsay Krause (volleyball), Clara Colombo (gymnastics), Madesyn Ronquillo (swimming) and Darby Thomas (track) will take part in the female athletes' panel.

During the brunch, the Title IX episode of The Place will also premiere. The episode and additional information from the brunch will be on huskers.com/TitleIX.
