Reed Malleck and Gentry Scheve lead the Nebraska men's golf team after the second day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate in Louden, Tenn.
Malleck was able to put together the best round for the Huskers on Saturday, with a score of 71 (+1) on the day. Back-to-back birdies on holes No. 7 and 8, brought him to one-under after 9. The senior out of York, Neb., has already shown improvement from last season, shooting under his 2022-23 average of 74.86 on both days in Knoxville. Reed will enter the third round on Sunday at 143 (+3), moving up on the leaderboard to tie for 30th.
After tying a career-best with 66 in the opening round, Scheve was able to put up another solid performance for the Big Red. After opening with a bogey on No. 1, the senior bounced back on the very next hole with a birdie on a tough 483-yard par-4. Another birdie on No. 13 brought Gentry to 73 (+3) and was enough to keep him in the top 20 overall heading into the final day at one-under par.
A tough start to the back nine didn't deter fifth-year senior Will Marshall, as he was able to notch the first eagle of the year for the Husker squad. Coming off 3 straight bogies, Marshall recovered on No. 13 with a score of two on a 366-yard par-4. A 76 (+6) second round puts Will at eight-over for the tournament.
Rounding out the lineup for Nebraska are Harry Crockett and Grant Jebenis, who contributed a 73 (+3) and 77 (+7) respectively. This brings them both to 150 (+10) after the first two days.
Nebraska falls to eighth place out of 14 at 576 (+16) as a team after Saturday's round. The host, No. 9 Tennessee, continues to dominate the field, improving to 538 (-22), and leading second-place No. 28 Mississippi State (550) by 12 strokes. No. 29 Ole Miss (554) and No. 21 East Tennessee State (556) are the only other remaining teams to stay under par. No. 25 North Florida (565) finishes out the top 5 as we move into the final day of the Visit Knoxville Collegiate.
Nebraska will wrap up the weekend on Sunday with tee times TBD (by team standing). Live scoring and updates will be available on Huskers.com through Golfstat.
