Schutz Secures Greeno/Dirksen Title

Freshman Berlyn Schutz clocked a 17:10.66 to win the women’s 5K at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite on Saturday morning at the Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln. 

Schutz’ run marks her second-straight win to open her college career after winning the Augustana Twilight on Sept. 1 with a time of 17:17.2. The Lincoln-native is the second consecutive Nebraska freshman to cross the line first at the Greeno/Dirksen, with Alea Hardie taking last year’s title.

The Nebraska women totaled 62 points on the morning to claim second, 10 points behind the first-place Iowa State team. The men took fifth with 128 team points. Kansas won the team title with 29 points.

Brynna McQuillen finished eight seconds behind Schutz to pitch in a runner-up finish with a 17:18.37. Taya Skelton covered the course in 17:43.75, earning a spot in the top ten. Cami Merickel placed 22nd with an 18:10.82, while Jacqueline Abanses finished 27th with a time of 18:19.03. Rounding out the top seven for the Big Red, Emma Ralston clocked an 18:26.98 and Hannah Godwin ran an 18:34.47 to take 31st and 35th.

Trevor Acton led the way for the men, placing 19th with a time of 25:19.63. Eric Carothers and Jerry Jorgenson provided back-to-back finishes in the top 25, with Carothers clocking a 25:26.49 (24th) and Jorgenson running a 25:29.09 (25th). Colby Erdkamp crossed the line at 25:42.26 to place 28th, while Joe Volkmer took 33rd with a 25:58.56. Sam Kirchner (26:05.34) and Cal Puskar (26.14.22) completed the top seven for the men, placing 38th and 42nd.

Nebraska returns to competition on Sept. 29 at the Gans Greek Classic, hosted by Mizzou. Races begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo.
