Martin, Snell Make Stepladder Finals During PWBA Championship Week

Waterloo, Iowa - Husker alum and national champion Jasmine (Laugerman) Snell and returning Nebraska Bowling sophomore Jillian Martin continued another successful run with top five finishes Saturday evening at the PWBA Waterloo Pepsi Open. 

Martin was a dominant force during the opening rounds by finishing Friday's 12-game block with a 2,810 total, which was good enough for a 234.17 average and fourth place in the field of more than 80 bowlers. Martin secured her spot in the top-five, sitting comfortably in second with a 2,810 total and a 235.13 average making this her second-consecutive PWBA stepladder finals. 

As the second overall seed, Martin faced a familiar foe in round three of the stepladder finals, Diana Zavjalova. Martin had previously faced Zavjalova two nights ago in the Waterloo Open stepladder falling to Zavjalova 249-223. Martin battled, but Zavjalova came out on top with a score of 260-205. Martin finished third, good for $3,500.

A native of Papillion, Neb., Snell had a total of 2,779, a 231.58 average, after 12 games of qualifying, which was good for 11th place. Snell secured the fifth-place seed in the stepladder finals after her success in match play, as she finished with a total pinfall of 5,799 and a 231.63 average. 

Snell faced Verity Crawley in the first round of the finals where she fell to Crawley 246-202 to finish in fifth with a $2,000 check. 

The Waterloo Pepsi Open was the second tournament of PWBA Championship Week. The Championship Week will conclude with the PWBA Tour Championship, the final major of the 2023 PWBA Tour season, beginning August 13. The Tour Championship will feature 24 of the best PWBA bowlers across the nation.

The stepladder finals will start at 6 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday and will determine which player wins the 2023 PWBA Tour Championship and the $50,000 first-place prize. The finals will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network. All rounds leading up to the live TV broadcast will be streamed on BowlTV.com.
