Lincoln, Neb. – After an undefeated performance this past weekend, Samantha Alicea has earned Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week. The conference announced the award on Wednesday afternoon and Alicea is the first Husker this season to win the award.
Alicea helped lead the team to an ITA team ranking of No. 47 after she swept the weekend 6-0. Alicea grabbed three singles wins and three doubles victories with her doubles partner Raphaëlle Lacasse.
The Miami, Florida native defeated Colorado's Mila Stanojevic 7-5, 6-2 on Friday afternoon. On Sunday, Alicea bested both Wyoming's Maria Oreshkina 6-4, 6-3 and Kansas City's Laura Munoz-Baroja 6-2, 6-1 in singles play.
In doubles play, Alicea and Lacasse beat Colorado's Stanojevic and Elys Ventura 6-2 on Friday. The pair dominated on Sunday defeating Wyoming's Sophie Zehender and Ana Fernandez 6-2 and Kansas City's Munez-Baroja and Michela Xibilia 6-1.
Alicea will continue her fierce play as the Huskers host Wichita State on March 10 at 5.pm. CT at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
