Nebraska Athletics to Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

Nebraska Athletics will celebrate and highlight the contributions of Hispanic student-athletes and staff in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which symbolically runs from September 15 to October 15.

"While we constantly strive to celebrate all our student-athletes and staff throughout the year, we are grateful to be able to bring special attention to the contributions of our Hispanic student-athletes and staff during National Hispanic Heritage Month," said Dr. Lawrence Chatters, Executive Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Initiatives. "I encourage our fans to learn more about this important month and to get involved in their local celebrations."

"I have a great sense of gratitude for and pride in Husker nation's recognition and celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month," said Nebraska head swimming and diving coach Pablo Morales. "As the son of Cuban immigrants, I am proud of the courage, strength and determination behind the story of our family's move to America, a pride which extends to the infusion of all Hispanic cultures into our society and the positive contributions they have made and for their sharing of unique and vibrant traditions and perspectives that enrich all of us. I am grateful and proud that Nebraska honors Hispanic heritage in this way."

During the month-long celebration, the athletic department will highlight student-athletes and staff through personal spotlights shared on social media. On October 5, Nebraska Athletics will host a fiesta at the stadium for student-athletes and staff. This event will include music, dancing performed by the Sangre Azteca dancers from Proyecto Cultural and special Hispanic cultural foods.

"This celebration provides an opportunity for people to ask questions and learn more about Hispanic culture, especially if they don't have a personal connection to it or have interacted with someone who is part of the culture," said senior swim captain Madesyn Ronquillio when asked about her perspective of the importance of celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month.

If fans would like to get involved, all are welcome to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Fiesta on the Green at the Union Plaza on September 22 from 5-8 p.m.
