Universityof Nebraska rifle captain Cecelia Ossi was selected for the 2022 USA Shooting World Championship Team on Tuesday. Ossi, a native of Annandale, N.J., was one of six shooters selected for the Junior Women's Smallbore team.
The 2022 Rifle and Pistol World Championships will be held in Cairo, Egypt, Oct. 12-25. These tournaments are the athlete's first chance at earning an Olympic quota for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.
"I am honored and excited to not only represent my school, but my country, at the world championships!," Ossi said. "I am thankful for the people around me who constantly push me to be better and for God's endless blessings, without which none of this would be possible! GBR!"
As a sophomore in 2021-22, Ossi recorded a smallbore average of 586.30, which set Nebraska' single-season record, on her way to CRCA All-America honors in the event. Ossi won five individual event titles and also represented the Huskers in the 2022 NCAA Championships, placing ninth in the event. Ossi, who competed in all 12 matches for the Huskers in 2021-22, also posted an air rifle average of 590.75 and an aggregate average of 1,176.92. Her score of 597 in air rifle against Akron on Jan. 15, 2022, tied the school record in the event.
"Cecelia has an amazing opportunity to represent the United States, Nebraska, and herself at this match," said head coach Mindy Miles. "The World Championship team is an incredible achievement. The match is held every 4 years, offset by the Olympics by 2 years. A lot of the athletes attending the match will be seen through the quad until the next Olympics. This match will give her a taste of what it feels like to be on a world stage, an event in which I am sure she will rise. She has earned this with the countless hours she puts in on the range and her relentless dedication to improving her skill. Cecelia is an amazing athlete and earns every opportunity she is given. I am proud she will be representing Nebraska not only because of her athletic skill but her amazing character."
Ossi is one of two returning All-Americans back for the Huskers in 2022-23, as Nebraska begins its season against UTEP on Saturday, Oct. 8. The meet takes place at the NU Rifle Range beginning at 8 a.m.
