Reed Malleck golfed a perfect 3-0 record for Nebraska men's golf at the Big Ten Match Play on Friday and Saturday at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
Malleck, a sophomore from York, Neb., opened the match play with a 1 up victory over Rutgers' Brendan Hansen. In the next round, Malleck posted a 3&1 win over Maryland's Will Celiberti. He added his third win on Saturday morning with a 3&1 victory over Minnesota's Eduardo Galdos.
As a team, the Huskers dropped the matchups against Rutgers (3-2-0) and Maryland (3-2-0) with narrow margins, while ending the third round with a tie against Minnesota.
"We didn't get the results we were hoping for," Nebraska Head Coach Brett Balak said. "We lost some close matches that easily could have gone either way. All the guys really competed hard and had a great attitude all weekend. It was great to start our spring season with other Big Ten teams at an awesome place like Hammock Beach."
Senior Mark Foelbaek also recorded a pair of wins, with a 2 up decision over Rutgers' Rhett Sellers and a 3&1 win on Saturday over Ben Warian from Minnesota. In the Friday afternoon session, Caleb Badura added a win of his own with a 1 up decision over Maryland's Will Koras. In the final round of the tournament for the Huskers, Will Marshall recorded a tie when facing Minnesota's Bennett Swavely.
The Huskers will open stroke play for the spring season later this month (Feb. 18-20) at the Husker Alumni Dual in the Desert, hosted in Scottsdale, Ariz. at Desert Mountain Golf Club.
