NU Finds Individual Success at Grand View

The Nebraska wrestling team had two individuals take first place in their respective weight-class pools at the Grand View Open on Saturday. Overall, more than 40 teams competed at the open along with 14 Huskers making the trip to Pleasant Hill, Iowa. In addition to the first-place performances, five Nebraska grapplers recorded top five finishes.

Wrestlers from the 10th-ranked Huskers, No. 1 Iowa, No. 3 Missouri, No. 14 Iowa State, No. 16 Northern Iowa and No. 25 Northwestern among others were placed into different divisions and pools and advanced based on their results.

In the freshman/sophomore division, Quinton Chavez (125) recorded a win against Cowley's Angel Avila and took his consolation match against Doane's Russell Nickerson to an extra period, but fell 4-2. At 141, Blake Cushing went 6-2 on the weekend and recorded a 4th-place finish. Nic Stoltenberg (157) won his first four matches before falling to Iowa State's Andrew Huddleston. He bounced back and finished in fifth place. Also at 157, Joshua Licking competed but fell in the opening and the consolation rounds. To close out this division, Elise Brown Ton (174) finished in third place with a win over Providence's Bridger Hill, and Zak Taylor (197) lost in the consolation round but tallied a win against Zach Choate (unattached) due to medical forfeit.

In the open division, Boo Dryden (133) took home the crown. He defeated Lincoln College's Blake Cagle and Northwestern's Manuel Jaramillo in the opening rounds before recording wins in the quarters and semis. In the championship bout, Dryden won by decision over fellow Husker Dominick Serrano. Serrano also had a day for himself at the open as he recorded a 4-1 mark including two pins.

At 149, Kevon Davenport went 2-2 on the day as he recorded wins over Ryan Ojeda of Grand View and Ja Melle Dye of Ottawa. Jagger Condomitti (165) had a good showing as he won his first three matches of the day before falling to Iowa State's Isaac Judge. He made it to the third-place match but lost a close 4-2 decision to take fourth.

Nathan Haas (184) was the Huskers' second champion of the day as he recorded four-straight wins and a 10-4 decision in the championship match over Grand View's Ben Lee.

To wrap up play for the Huskers, Anthony Gaona, Landon Brown and Austin Emerson wrestled in their respective classes but fell in the consolation rounds.

Next up, the Huskers will stay home to host No. 13 North Carolina on Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. The dual will be aired on BTN and will feature Pepsi Pack the House with $1 tickets and $1 Pepsi products.
