The Huskers (4-0) are ranked 12th nationally in this week's College Rifle Coaches Association top 20 poll. They have wins against two other teams in the top 20: No. 10 Army (Oct. 23) and No. 8 Ohio State (Sept. 25).
Head Coach Mindy Miles says that the team is ready to compete again after not having a match last weekend.
"I am confident that the team members are ready for the weekend. After a much needed off weekend, they should come in refreshed and ready to compete. They have all been working extremely hard in practice over the last two weeks and have shown improvements."
VMI Women's Rifle (0-4) has one loss against TCU, one coming from a Navy invitational, one against North Georgia, and one from Morehead State. They are led by senior Jessica Hankin, who competed in all nine of VMI's matches last season and placed top-10 in at least one category in every match last season.
The Huskers are coming off of a significant home win against Army. They defeated the Cadets with a score of 4,677-4,626. Madelynn Erickson placed first with a score of 1,176. She was followed by Cecelia Ossi in second (1,174). Erickson placed first in the air rifle with a 592 and Ossi placed first in the smallbore with a 587.
Sophomores Ossi and Erickson have been staples for the team this season. The pair have taken the top two spots overall for the Huskers in all of their matches this season. Ossi is averaging an aggregate of 1,175.5 this season, while Erickson is averaging a 1,174.5. Ossi is the team captain this year.
"Cecelia and Madelynn are very focused and hard-working in practice. Cecelia is the team captain this year and has played a good role in bridging communication between the team and I. She also aggressively pursues improvement every day in practice. Madelynn serves as a consistent teammate in both score and demeanor," Head Coach Mindy Miles said of the two.
Ossi is incredibly thankful for her teammates, coaches, and everyone else who continues to support her and Erickson.
"I know Maddie and I have been putting in a lot of work on the range, and it is exciting to see the improvement from last season. We are incredibly fortunate to have two dedicated coaches who put in just as much time and effort as we do to help us succeed. Additionally, I am very thankful for this team and all the support from our athletics staff. God has blessed us immensely, and I know he will continue to watch over us as we finish the first half of our season."
After they face VMI, the Huskers will head to Fort Worth, Texas to face TCU.
