Rifle Team Set to Take On UTEP

Lincoln- The Nebraska Rifle team is preparing for its second match of the season, as they face UTEP this Saturday, Oct. 9.   The match in El Paso, Texas, is set to begin at 9 a.m. central.

The Huskers are coming off a win against Ohio State on Sept. 25 in their season opener. The team posted an aggregate of 4,678, beating the Buckeyes by just five points. Team captain Cecelia Ossi posted an aggregate of 1,173 and fellow sophomore Madelynn Erickson scored a 1,172, to place second and third, respectively. The Huskers outscored the Buckeyes 2,329-2,326 in the smallbore and 2,349-2,347 in the air rifle.

'I'm looking for the team to continue their momentum into this week's match at UTEP," Head Coach Mindy Miles said.

UTEP has not competed in a match yet this season. They are led by redshirt junior Isabel Brooks and redshirt senior Jennifer Windle, who had average aggregates of 1,140 and 1,139, respectively, last year. UTEP is coached by Austin Litherland, who was a rifle athlete at Tennessee Tech and Akron. The Miners averaged a 4,588 aggregate in 2019-20.

The Huskers are 11-5 all-time against the Miners, and outscored them 4,636-4,560 in the two teams' last matchup in 2019. Nebraska currently has a five-match win streak against UTEP and has a 4-3 record in away meets against the Miners.

Miles says that "the team has been working very hard over the last week and a half to improve on the skills they didn't quite refine during the last match."
