Ty Robinson Quotes - 11-25-21

Ty Robinson
Defensive Lineman

On Damian Jackson
Damian Jackson, he is a scary teammate...no I am just playing. He is one of my really close friends I feel like on the team. He really helped me, along with Chris Walker, they kind of helped me during that COVID year in the weight room to get bigger, faster, stronger, so I could be able to play. I really owe those guys a lot. He is a great leader, great example of the kind of person you would want to be out on the football field. Get stuff done. Does the right thing and holds you accountable, even though sometimes it is tough love, and I really appreciate that from him.”

On the bye week
“I feel great. I know we had two immediate practices last week to keep our blood going so we just were not stiff coming back. No fatigue. My body feels great. I got a lot of school work done too, so I can catch up on that and really focus on the last four games that we have of the season. I feel like everyone came out with a better energy today.”

On generating pass rush
“In my opinion, if you look at it, every game we have kind of gotten a good pass rush presence in the beginning and then you start to see teams go to three-step quick release. We are getting back there and they are just getting the ball out too quick to where not anybody could get in. But I do know that it is more than just getting back there, the pass presence we are told as a D line to get our hands up in the window. I mean you see us deflect a few balls here and there and really it just has to be staying in our pass rush lanes, really close in that pocket so that he cannot escape and squeeze through seams that we create.”

On getting sacks against Purdue
“That is fine, you want to hold on to the ball. I mean we are going to do our best to get back there. I know we are going to have a good game plan, good scheme for this week to get back there. A lot of games, a lot of good calls to help us out with that as well, and then we just have to win our one-on-ones when we have the opportunity.”

On Purdue rotating quarterbacks
“I know 13 - Jack Plummer - he was benched after halfway through the season and then that older dude (Aidan O'Connell) came up. It seems like the starting guy is more of a pro-style quarterback. Jack is more of a, I would say pro, but he was more run the ball type, and then their other guy (Austin Burton), he is just more of a wildcat kind of quarterback, really just to run the ball back there.”

On Purdue’s scheme
“They are a big pass heavy team. I really do not think they had an identity in the run game. I think we held them to negative two rushing yards last year, which I mean is a really big positive for us, but like we were just saying, I think the pass game is going to be the key focus for us this week. We cannot overlook the run game at all because we have to stick to our bread and butter, but I think we know that we can kind of handle the run game a little bit if we just do our job.”

On what could have been improved in Michigan and Minnesota
“I think tackling was really the biggest issue for us. Michigan not as much, but the Minnesota game, really bad angle, bad coverage of the tackle guys running to the ball and missing tackles. That is really what it was and just little details again, fine details.”

On losing in close games
“It is just those little details. Play a little bit harder. I feel like we are playing with great effort, great intensity. It is just being locked in in those key moments, those key plays that are making us lose these one-score games, that are really going to be the turning point. So if we can start winning more of those key plays, then I feel like it will be a happier program.”

On example of key plays
“It is a third down, and for me for example in the Minnesota game, I hit the tackle and I peeked in my gap and I saw a running back go away, and I peeked in the other gap and he ran right in my primary gap for a first down and more. Maybe sometimes not blowing a coverage, but maybe getting beat on a one-on-one or maybe a tackling issue as well. I mean, it is an easy layup tackle and you end up missing it or something like that, just to focus on the little details.”

On the setup of the end of the season
“Nothing really. This whole season we have been going pretty hard in the weight room. Today I mean I squatted six plates with Cam Jurgens and Mosai Newsom. We kind of did our own workout today and then out on the field. It is the same thing. I am going to bring the same juice, same energy every day to make my guys better, just like I know they will make me better.”

On bowl eligibility
“Yes, I would love to go to a bowl game but I mean we cannot go to a bowl game if we do not win three more games, so it is just going to be one game at a time. Really focus on Purdue, and then Wisconsin next and then we will have that bye week as well, so really just start playing with a lot more energy that we have over the season to win these games.”

On Purdue quarterback Jack Plummer
“I do not know him very well. I played against his brother in high school once, and I think we won. I got to play against them last year. He is a good quarterback. He is pretty shifty. He got me last year, so hopefully I get to get him back this year.”

On coaches handling tough losses
“Coach Tuioti really preaches that when you hit the stone 100 times, it may not crack on the 100th time or the 99th time, but that one time it does crack, that is when you feel accomplished. So I feel like it is just kind of that same goal. I mean we keep going week after week after week, pound, pound, pound and we end up losing, but one of these days that rock is finally going to crack and we are going to finally start winning games. So that has been kind of the message in the D line room and then I have not really seen anything waver from the other coaches on the defensive side or the offensive side. They are still doing their jobs pretty darn well, and we are going out there with high intensity and practice.”
