Lincoln, Neb. – Despite amassing more shots and shots on goal, the Nebraska soccer team (4-8-2, 0-4-2 Big Ten) fell to Michigan, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Hibner Stadium.
The Huskers struck first with a goal in the 27th minute, as sophomore Reagan Raabe sent a shot from inside the penalty box, which was deflected by freshman Abbey Schwarz and sent into the net. It marked Schwarz's second career goal and Raabe's second assist of the season.
Michigan (9-2-3, 3-1-2 Big Ten) tied the game in the 32nd minute when Raleigh Loughman sent a shot into the top left corner of the net past the extending Sami Hauk. The Wolverines then converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute after Danielle Wolfe was fouled in the box.
In the second half, Michigan stretched the lead when Loughman found the back of the net in the 62nd minute, but Nebraska responded. Sophomore Eleanor Dale scored her fifth goal of the season in the 84th minute off a header pass from Schwarz who gathered a throw-in from freshman Jordan Zade. Schwarz now has a team-high five assists on the year.
Nebraska had multiple opportunities to tie the game, outshooting the Wolverines by a 21-10 margin for the match, including a 13-6 lead in shots on goal. Nebraska also held the advantage in corner kicks 11-4.
Hauk, making her 10th start of the season, collected one save in 90 minutes of action. She was one of two Huskers to play the full time on Sunday, along with senior Grace Brown.
Next week the Huskers remain at home facing border-rival Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7:05 p.m. (CT) and Wisconsin on Senior Day, Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1:05 p.m. (CT). After its home stand, Nebraska will close out regular season play on the road against Illinois and Minnesota.
