On improving execution of the option game
“It’s something we’ve been actively practicing. It’s one of those concepts that you just need reps and reps. We do it every day at practice and we continue to work on it. You see some of that chemistry paying off.”
On the amount of guys running the option
“That’s interesting. I think there is standard that we have each of those guys try and be a certain distance away from me and timing because for me it can’t differentiate that way. It’s got to be the same. They’ve got to be in the right spot. That’s why those reps are so crucial with all those guys.”
On the 2018 game against Michigan and how different the teams were then
“I remember us getting smacked. It was a rough game for myself and a rough game for the team. I know I only played a half of football. Different teams. We are in a much different spot as a program and as a unit on both sides of the ball here. We were physically outmatched.”
On how this game will be different
“Our program and our team is in a different spot. Physically better. I feel very confident in the guys we have just top down.”
On if there is an air of positivity around the program
“It’s hard to put a definitive stamp on it but I know the guys right now are really confident with the type of team we have. To an extent I believe we’ve earned that. We have a lot of trust in each other and we’ve worked really hard and know the things we are capable of as a team. Excited. We’ve got a lot of good teams on the schedule left.”
On the feeling of the fans and people outside the program
“I would say that feeling I felt in the stadium I don’t know if I’ve felt that ever in my life and in my time here. It was a great surge of energy. I think the fans really approved and were excited about what they saw on the field and we oozed confidence on the sideline. I think it’s fair to say walking around a little bit it’s felt very nice.”
On the trust he feels in his offensive lineman
“Like I’ve said before I feel really confident in Coach Austin and his ability to get those guys ready. They’ve been working their tails off. They have work to do like we all do. They are continuing to gain everyone’s trust. Saturday was a great step and today’s practice was as well.”
On Teddy Prochazka
“Definitely but if we did not think he was capable he would not be doing that. A lot of confidence in him and I have all of the confidence in him.”
On the coaching match up
“I can see all of the potential story lines there for sure. They are both former quarterbacks. Guys who played in the NFL. Both at their alma mater. Respected in their industry. And yeah they are somewhat tenured here. Frost has been here for more than a couple of years. Harbaugh as well at Michigan. It is a big game for both of us. I know they are trying to continue to build momentum but so are we. Coming to our place it will be an exciting game. A big game for both programs.”
On Michigan’s defense
“They have put up some good numbers. They are a good unit. Fast. Physical. They are going to bring it. I know that is something they pride themselves on. We are ready for the challenge.
On Zavier Betts
“I think I had mentioned something before the season had even started about Betts. And the type of potential he has. And I think he is realizing that himself and really just putting in the work and continuing to build trust with his teammates and us the quarterbacks. A lot of faith in him. He is a stud and he is going to continue to get better.”
“He has a high standard for himself which is always good to see in a young player. He is continuing to build on it. Seems like he is not satisfied with any of the success he has had so far. And neither are we. We know what he is capable of and it is much more.”
