NU returns five shooters in hopes of second straight NCAA bid
Lincoln -- The Nebraska rifle program begins its quest for a second straight NCAA appearance this weekend, as the Huskers released their 2021 schedule.
The nine-match regular-season schedule begins this weekend, as the Huskers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for matches against Ohio State (Jan. 9) and Mississippi (Jan. 10). Ohio State also hosts this year's NCAA Championships on March 12-13.
"We are all thankful that we are being given the opportunity to compete this semester," Nebraska rifle coach Rachel Martin said. "We have some ground to make up, as many teams were able to get scores on the board in the fall, and this first match will show what we need to work on in the next few months. I have a great group of athletes that work hard, and they love to win. I have every faith in them and that they will work as a team to get to the NCAA Championships in March."
NU qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships, which were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic under Martin, who begins her second season at her alma mater in 2021. Nebraska returns five shooters from last season, including returning second-team All-Americans Elena Flake (Smallbore, Air Rifle) and Macey Way (Air Rifle) as well as Emily Cheramie, who was an all-conference selection. Flake and Cheramie are back after setting school records in their air rifle and smallbore, respectively.
Nebraska begins the home portion of its 2021 slate on Saturday, Jan. 16, as the Huskers will host the first of two matches that weekend against Air Force. The Huskers will close the month with a two-match swing to Kentucky with matches against the Wildcats (Jan. 22) and North Carolina State (Jan. 24).
The Huskers begin February with their final home match of the season, as they host Akron on Saturday, Feb. 6, before traveling to Army West Point on Feb. 13. The Huskers will travel to Murray, Ky., for the NCAA Qualifier on Sun., Feb. 21.
