On the run defense
“I am proud of the defense and the way that we played on Saturday. We knew going into it that number nine was the top leading rusher in the nation so we knew if we could stop him we could stop their offense pretty good. We did that. I think we held him to 50 yards or so the whole game. The second half we held them to 15 yards total. That is really good in our book but it was not good enough to get the win so we will have to come back this week and really focus on the little key details.”
On stacking performances
“It is huge. The more we stack the more confidence we are going to build. It is going to start flowing over to the whole team and kind of that mentality and the swagger that we kind of have to ourselves as we start to stack saying look we can do it you guys can too you just have to hop on the train with us a little bit.”
On takeaways from Michigan State
“Whenever I watch film I am really hard on myself. I am my hardest critic. I notice the little things that most people don’t. Like my family saying you played great and I think it is an eh performance. So getting into it we went over the film this morning. There was a lot more good plays then fix it plays when going over the film with Coach Tuioti. Like I said get back to it this week. That game is over and we are moving on.”
On small fixes
“For me personally I am really starting to work on my get off and trying to beat every person off of the ball before they can even get their hands on me. Quicker hands. Be more violent. Be more aggressive. Be more chaotic. Cause more disruption. And then obviously my pass rush. It has been more of a focus for me. It still is and it still needs to be worked on and get better.”
On the home advantage
“It is always great to have our fans. Wherever we go we are still going to have a pretty big crowd following us to every game. But being at home and being at Memorial Stadium a lot more fun. You get to play in front of your fans. People that came from all across the state get to come watch one game so I really feel like it brings the energy that lacks sometimes.”
On Garrett Nelson
“He is a dude. G Nelly is a dude. I love playing with him. When we are out there we have a great time. We are talking back and forth. We are both on the same level. Really locked in together. And then the plays he is making are just huge. He is helping us out a lot. He has been making really big stops as well. So I am really proud of him and what he has accomplished so far.”
On the confidence of the defense
“Like I said before it is a nameless faceless opponent. Whoever is going to be in front of us our defense has the same mentality we are going to go out there and we are going to get your money’s worth right. Whoever it is going to be whether Alabama is in front of us or if it is somebody else we are still going to play the same way. We are not scared. We are going to do the same thing we have been doing.”
On the defense’s mentality after Michigan State
“We are all a time. There are no individuals on the team. If one person does good we all do good. Sometimes it does not fall the way you want it to but you pick those guys up and you try and bring them alongside of you for the next week so you can show the true potential we have. We are so close and I am really tired of hearing that we are so close because we can do it we can get it done. In my opinion we should be a 5-0 team right now but it just the little things that matter that are not really being focused on by the guys so I think we are really going to start honing in on that and getting that done.”
On making adjustments during season
“It is pretty difficult. I mean I am going through it right now. I am in a couple classes right now that really take my time away from football but you kind of learn to balance it back and forth. Usually I do not leave the stadium during the weekdays. The only time I get to go home is at night or on the weekends. That is the type of commitment I have to it. I do not know about the other guys but I see it a lot more from dudes that are staying here and getting that extra work. Going up watching film getting treatment if they need to get it. Whatever it is.”
