On biggest test with Oklahoma game
“They are pretty big up front all across the board we know they have a few transfers coming in their center is a transfer from U of A their right guard is a transfer from UCLA but they are also pretty big guys. Their tackles averaging 6’5” 320 pounds so I mean it is going to be a battle in the trenches. But we are big too so it is really just going to be on who wants it more at the end of the day.”
On thoughts on Oklahoma’s quarterback
“Most definitely. I know in the run I mean he is not afraid to pull it I know Spencer is not afraid to pull it. I mean he is going to do everything he can to keep the play alive so I am sure that we are going to have to be careful of that and help contain the quarterback and make sure he does not leave the pocket and just get pressure on him like we have been. From what I have seen from last year this year he has only gotten better. You could tell his emotion and his mentality has kind of changed and switched from last year to this year. And he is ready to go. He does not care who is in front of him. He is going to give you his 110% best effort. And so I mean his technique has gotten way better. Like we have talked about before he has been a really good leader so far so I am really high praise on him and I am really proud of him.”
On defensive dissatisfaction
“We should not give up any points. I mean that is kind of where I am at. A shutout is the goal. The past two games should have been a shutout. Little things here and there guys not being focused in and locked in. Missing little details and trying to try to do more than what they are supposed to do and pop out of a gap or they miss a guy in the coverage in the back end. But I mean that is our standard every game is a shoutout no points given up.”
On what could improve defensively
“Just playing our football especially when we go back and look at film Coach Chinander does a really great job at showing us how close we are to being an elite defense compared to what we are doing it has been pretty good so far. He says right there on the brain we just have to push in we just have to go up another level what we have been doing is not good enough even though we are winning. We are striving for perfection.”
On Oklahoma rivalry
“I personally do not know much I just know that it is a pretty big rivalry I mean I have seen stuff on YouTube I have seen the replays of them. Those dudes were going after it. I am sure I am going to hear a lot more later this week from Jason Peter and Jay Foreman. I am sure they are going to give us what they are thinking how it was back then when they were playing against them but I definitely know this is a really big game really important game.”
On Teddy Prochazka
“Yeah since I have been here he has really shed a lot of that bad weight and turned it into good weight and he has really made a lot of gains in the weight room and then I think he is probably one of the most technically sound guys on the D line like he has really solid technique and so I know when he goes out there that there is not going to be a problem he is going to do his assignment which is really nice to have that kind of trust.”
On becoming an elite defense
“We need more turnovers. The goal every game is to get at least two or three turnovers. Holding them to three and outs a lot more three and outs a lot less third down conversions for them holding them to where they do not get I do not know I think the average game that gets is like 20 first downs and so if you hold him to less than that that is pretty good pretty good defense. Just tackling hiding our defense better just hiding our plays better just playing at a different level running to the ball making sure we get eleven hands to the ball every play.”
On OU quarterback challenge
“He is going to be comfortable in that pocket he is going to have a lot of trust in his O-lineman I feel like so that is where we really need to take advantage and kind of slice those O-line so we can get back there and kind of take advantage of that.”
On Big Ten Teams similar to OU
“Yeah I can tell you this every game I go home pretty sore from being in the trenches we are going against those guys. Big Ten O-lineman are they like to say that the Big Ten is really close to being like an NFL type of league with how we run our defense and the guys we go up and against and I mean there is pretty big guys here so it is a really good look.”
On defense going out first
“We are tone setters. We are going to go out there and we are going to let you know how the game is going to go for the rest of the 60 minutes so I am really happy they put us out there first so we can kind of the set the tone and set that edge and kind of let them know what is going to happen.”
