On the intensity level at practice
“Being more stricter at practice. Being more consistent and being more focused. The intensity has to be up. Going into every practice likes it’s a game so when a game comes it is just like practice.”
On last year’s game against Illinois
“It is in the back of the mind because nobody wants the game to go like that. So it is like a redemption. But at the same time we are focusing on this weekend. This year at Illinois since they have a new coaching staff we are just trying to focus up and get the game plan right.”
On the Blackshirt distribution
“It was great. I did not know we were getting our Blackshirts today after practice. Seeing the former Blackshirts giving out the Blackshirts and also give us a speech about what the Blackshirts was like back then which was great. It was a great ceremony. It was Jason Peter. It was Kenny Wilhite the one who gave me my jersey.”
On preparing for Illinois
“It is not really tricky we just go off of the coach that just got hired his last team because it is mostly the same game plan overall. Offensive formation is the same game plan period. You just have to focus on what they did in the spring game which is not much but at the same time trying to get a glimpse of what they are trying to do this year.”
On the season opener
“The season openers really set the tone. You really are sending the tone for the first game. It really is a big deal. So we have to come out with our hands swinging going one-hundred and ten percent.”
On Illinois the last couple of years
“I am not really focused on last year. I am not really trying to think about last year. I am really focused on this year. I am focused on the game coming up.”
On Illinois’ offense
“There are a couple players that came back. And there is a quarterback they had number who is transferring. They have (Brandon) Peters at quarterback. Mostly we just focus on that and see what they did last year and focus on this week. The question is with the offense. They got a totally new offense because of the new coaches. Just trying to get feel for it.”
On the focus on turnovers
“That is the emphasis this year just the turnover consistency. Practice to the game. Emphasizing turnovers in practice every single day because the turnovers change the game as we all know. We practice interceptions. We go get interceptions during the team periods. We practice forced fumbles. We practice fumble recovery. Its something we do every day. Just be consistent at it.”
On the depth of the secondary
“Not yet. The competition in the secondary grew. It brought out the best in us. I think the (defensive back) group this was one of our best camps just for everyone knowing what they were doing and it is more competitive this year. Everybody know their line. Everybody knows the play call. Everybody is playing fast.”
On Myles Farmer
“Myles Farmer. He is doing good. he is back like he never left. You can’t even tell he had an injury to be honest.”
On Damien Daniels and Cam Taylor-Britt
“It is great. As you know all year and the previous year they have been very outspoken in the games before. Being captains was not a surprise. I hope they lead the defense to be great. Even with them as captains there are a million more leaders on the team. It does not really affect us at all. As captains they have to be more outspoken. Be more vocal and be willing to sacrifice.”
On Cam Taylor-Britt
“From his game from freshman to now you can see a big difference. His personality his mental state of being and his physical state of being. The football player that he is now is the reason why he is a captain.”
