Nebraska golfer Hannah Thiele and gymnast Evan Hymanson were selected to receive a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship, announced the Big Ten Conference.
Hymanson earned his second postgraduate scholarship, as he was also awarded the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this year. Hymanson graduated in May with a degree in mechanical engineering. He also was awarded Nebraska's Male Student-Athlete of the Year honor. Hymanson is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. He was a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2020 and has been on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll nine times. Hymanson has been a standout performer for the Husker men's gymnastics program over the last four years. He captained the Huskers to a fourth-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships, the third time NU reached the NCAA Team Finals during his career.
Thiele earned her first postgraduate scholarship after being one of just eight Husker student-athletes across all sports to be named a Nebraska Outstanding Scholar in 2021 for carrying better than a 3.9 cumulative GPA throughout her collegiate career. Thiele earned her bachelor's degree as a human development and family science major (pre-nursing) in May. Thiele was a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. She was also a WGCA Scholastic All-American in 2018 and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll eight times. Thiele earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award twice and has been named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team four times. She has made an impact on the Nebraska golf program posting Nebraska's No. 3 finish at the 2018 Big Ten Championships and finishing tied for 61st at the Big Ten Championships in 2019.
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program. The $7,500 scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
