Columbus, Ohio – The Nebraska rifle team posted its highest national championship finish since 2017, as the Huskers finished sixth at the NCAA Championships on Saturday.
Nebraska totaled a score of 2,356 in the air rifle on Saturday and completed the two-day event with an aggregate score of 4,676. It is the 14th time that Nebraska has finished sixth or higher at the NCAA Championship.
"We shot about our average in air rifle, and you can't ask for more than that at the biggest match of the year," Nebraska rifle coach Rachel Martin said. "We have room to grow as a program, but we have the right group of athletes that have the potential of building a national championship quality team."
Kentucky won the national title with a two-day score of 4,731, while TCU, which finished first in the air rifle with a mark of 2,380 on Saturday, was second with a score of 4,722. Ole Miss (4,710), West Virginia (4,704) and Alaska Fairbanks (4,682) rounded out the top five.
Nebraska's youth was on display on Saturday, as the Huskers' top two finishers in the event were freshman.
Cecelia Ossi paced NU with a 17th-place showing with a score of 592, while Madelynn Erickson placed fourth with a mark of 590. Junior Elena Flake was 33rd with a score of 587, while junior Kinga Aletto finished one spot behind Flake with a 587. Senior Emily Cheramie rounded out the Husker lineup with a 585. Cheramie placed eighth in Saturday's smallbore event, the Huskers' highest finish in either apparatus.
