FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Four Nebraska track and field student-athletes took center stage at the NCAA Track & Field Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday.
Burger Lambrechts Jr. highlighted the day for the Huskers with a fifth-place finish in the shot put. Lambrechts Jr., the Big Ten indoor champion, threw 65-0 3/4 (19.83m) on his first of six attempts to earn first-team All-America honors, his third career All-America accolade. It was the best finish by a Husker male in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2004.
Kevin Shubert took 16th place in the men's shot put with a throw of 59-8 1/2 (18.20m) on his third attempt. The sophomore from Millard North earned second-team All-America honors in his first-ever trip to nationals.
Lishanna Ilves also finished 16th in the long jump in her first trip to nationals. Ilves jumped 20-1 3/4 (6.14m) to finish out her indoor season with second-team All-America accolades. Ilves was one of just three freshmen to qualify for the women's long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
On the track, mile school-record holder George Kusche ran a time of 3:58.24 in the mile preliminaries, the third-fastest time of his Husker career but the fastest in school history on a standard 200-meter track, to qualify for tomorrow's final. Kusche's time was the sixth-fastest out of the 16 competitors and puts him in the 10-man final that will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. His previous best 200-meter mile time was 3:59.61 at the 2019 Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational.
Also on Saturday, Papay Glaywulu will compete in the men's triple jump at 1 p.m.
