How would you characterize the difference between the defense in the first and second half?
"I don’t know if there too much different. I mean the first half definitely just a misfit on the 1st drive there. In the second half, it was more so just a couple of screen plays and the tackling was definitely different between the first and second half."
If you had to give a defense a grade, what kind of grade would you give them?
“Our goal as a defense is to hold them to zero points, and we gave up 21 and that is a huge thing for us. That is all we can control. As far as a letter grade, I would say somewhere in the B range.”
What have you seen from Ty Robinson and Casey Rogers in the first two games?
“Honestly. I been impressed with their consistency. That was something I really struggled with a young player and that is something that all young players struggle with. The hardest thing for them is to be consistent. They have been really solid at that and making plays within the scheme of the defense. That is what we ask them to do and I’ve been proud of them for that.”
Do you things you talked about in those preseason film sessions being translated to the game?
“Yeah, without a doubt. Every play, every call we have on defense there is a specific technique that we talk about with Coach T (Tony Tuioti) that we emphasize every time I’m watching film with them. So just executing that no matter what the play, and I see that showing up a lot for them”
On mixing up linebackers and defensive ends to get more speed and use more players
“I think it is good for us to be able to get and out of even and odd fronts. It gives the offenses we are playing definitely more than one scheme that they have to scheme up. It makes it a little more difficult for them and they have to prepare and not know that we're going to be in the same place all the time. It's definitely good just to give him different looks.”
What is the mindset of the team about turning it around since there are fewer opportunities this year?
“Less games this year makes all the ones we do have that much more important so it's crucial for us to get a win this week and get on a roll. Winning is contagious so basically to get one and get it rolling”
As a Nebraska kid, what will it be like to play at an empty Memorial Stadium, and in what ways will it feel like a home game?
“We've definitely had tons of practices is in there with little to no fans people watching that then just other games we've had so far. It's not a huge difference to be honest. A lot of the away games I guess aren't necessarily Memorial Stadium and the amount of fans they have so be a little different compared to normal home game, but I don't think it's been as big of an issue as people thought it would be going into the year.”
What are you going to miss about a home game without any fans?
"That atmosphere and the electricity in the air is a feeling you really don’t get anywhere else in life. We have to do a good job of bringing our own energy and get it done ourselves.”
What do you see in the Penn State offense that may pose challenges on Saturday?
"I haven’t had a huge chance to watch much of them. We were just finishing up last week’s stuff (today). They have a dynamic quarterback and some dynamic receivers. We are going to have to keep those guys in check."
