Pre Northwestern

Press Conference Video

On the series with Northwestern and how they seemingly go down to the wire every year:
“Every minute counts when you play them. Every time I played them here, I’ve been a part of nothing but close games. I think it's been two overtime games and one that went down to the wire last year.  So this being my fourth one, you know if it's like that, I wouldn't expect anything different. I know they are tough, physical team that is very sound. They are very smart team and won’t beat themselves. They’ll keep themselves in the game as long as they can and wait for you to mess up. Going into this week, we just have to prepare like that is going to be the case. When game time comes, we need to play hard.”

How did you manage emotionally after getting the game canceled against Wisconsin:
“It was kind of rumors at first, then it became real. I didn't worry about it too much, whatever was going to happen. Whatever was going to happen, whether we would play a non-conference opponent or whether we wouldn’t play a game or whether we would play Wisconsin, I didn’t worry about it. Whatever was in front of me, that’s how I prepared. I just left it in God's hands and not worry about it just let it be what it is. So now, we just go on to the next one.”

On Northwestern’s offense and his familiarity with Peyton Ramsey:
“They look good. You know they're taking what they can get. The quarterback is making good decisions with the ball. The running backs are running hard for yardage. The running game looks good and gaps are opening up. We have to be there to fill. We have to be there in coverage and everything else will take care of itself. As long as we play good sound defense, read our keys and be where we are supposed to be, good things will happen.”

How does having the weekend off relate to how it helps in preparing for Northwestern and if it is an advantage:
I mean, I wouldn't necessarily say it is an advantage. They have a game up on us. We would love to have two games under our belt right now coming off another game. That just makes your football team better overall going into the third game having two games. We know we have Northwestern at hand and we have to prepare like that.  I get in a sense what he is saying with them having to play a game on Saturday and then Sunday, flip the page over to Nebraska. It was late last week when we found out we won't be playing anyway. We just had to use the days we had to prepare. They will use their time to prepare the right way, and we’ll have a football game on Saturday.

What have you seen in practice from Quinton Newsome, Myles Farmer and others who will have to step up:
Those guys are doing well in practice. You know how their numbers are being called. They're stepping up, you know, coming in eager to learn and eager to practice. They know that they're going to be depended on, so we just have to continue to stay with those guys and get them right and get them ready. As for me, there are helping me to get ready. They see things that I don't see sometimes. That's kind of like the characteristic of a strong room, when everybody can contribute and everyone has something to put forth, even the guys that don’t play. The guys that just came in when they can contribute and when your seniors can contribute. Everyone understand that we have one common goal. It is a beautiful thing. Right now, all of those guys are doing a good job coming to practice every day, ready to work. Whoever it is that goes in the game at whatever point we trust them, and you know we gonna love him and we gonna play hard.”

On playing two straight road games
“Going on the road, two weeks in a row will be challenging for any team, but we just we understand that. Regardless, we are going in there to accomplish one mission, and that is to come out with a win. We have to prepare like that and we have to put our best foot forward.”
