On Monday evening, October 19th, Nebraska Life Skills hosted a Financial Forum for third year student-athletes via Zoom. Austin Bristow – TEDx speaker, blogger and interactive workshop leader that helps individuals find a greater sense of personal freedom in their lives led the event for the 90 student-athletes that were in attendance. He focused on not only understanding personal finances but making disciplined decisions when it comes to their financial state. Bristow, focused on how they can create a financial game plan now, rather than waiting until after college. This approach is intentionally focused on putting them in the best position financially as they progress through their time in college and ultimately after graduation.
Throughout the evening, Bristow covered topics including: budgeting, taxes, retirement plans, credit, and basic investment knowledge. He encouraged the student-athletes to make disciplined financial decisions by being conscious of "short-term sensations versus long-term implications". To help them understand what this meant, he provided different resources and approaches they can use to keep track of their financial decisions. Junior Softball athlete Courtney Wallace found these resources to be useful: "I am glad we had the forum yesterday; it was very insightful. Austin shared a lot of great information about spending and budgeting that can be helpful especially after moving into my first apartment and learning how to manage my money."
Many of the student-athletes alike reported at the beginning of the event that they would rate their personal financial knowledge as "average", but by the conclusion of the evening, they found it to be extremely helpful in growing their knowledge and were grateful for the opportunity to learn from Bristow. Junior Men's Tennis athlete Patrick Cacciatorre expressed his gratitude by sharing: "I loved the Financial Forum. I felt that it gave us so many important topics to think about and gave student athletes a great start to prepare for life after sport and managing our money! I'm so appreciative of the Husker staff for giving us such a great opportunity to learn from Austin!"
