Inner Circle and N-Vest Host Webinar with Brian Curtis

On Monday, April 20th, the student-athlete leadership groups Inner Circle and N-Vest partnered together to present a webinar titled "Communication, Leadership, and Building Your Brand." As an effort to provide opportunities for personal and professional growth to those beyond members of these two leaderships groups, this webinar was open to all Nebraska student-athletes as well as student-athletes around the country. Leading the webinar was communications consultant, New York Times bestselling author, and a former television reporter and host, Brian Curtis.

39 participants joined in on the virtual call which was conducted via Zoom. Brian began by leading the group in a few exercises demonstrating that even though individuals might hear the same words, their interpretation of those words can be drastically different. The presentation then dove into communication a bit further as Brian outlined 8 tips for being a successful communicator as well as some principles for team communication. As the topic shifted to leadership, the participants learned some new definitions of the term, some common misconceptions about leadership, and how communication plays a role in leadership. Finally, Brian spoke about what a personal brand is and how one's actions can positively or negatively impact their personal brand.

"I attended the webinar because, going into my senior year, I wanted to learn how to guide my team and be a strong leader. It was very informative in conveying how every person on a team has the skill to be a leader. I learned by showcasing our strengths and allowing ourselves to receive helpful criticism, we can build better relationships with each other" shared Husker Women's Gymnast, Anika Dujakovich, about her experience with the webinar.

As the current situation of campus shutdowns continues, the Life Skills team will continue providing opportunities like this one, and will be promoting these and other opportunities made available by peer institutions via Twitter on the @NULifeSkills account.
