Gleason Scores Ranked Win, but Huskers Fall to Pepperdine

LINCOLN -- Will Gleason scored a singles victory over the No. 69 player in the country, but it was not enough as the Nebraska men's tennis team came up short on Friday night, falling to the Pepperdine Waves by a final score of 1-6 at the Dillon Tennis Center on Friday night.

The match began with doubles play. At the No. 1 spot, the duo of Daniel de Jonge and Adrian Oetzbach topped Albert Sprlak-Puk and Andre Saleh, 6-2. At No. 2, Conrado Summaria and Tim Zeitvogel defeated William Gleason and Patrick Cacciatore 6-1 to secure the doubles point for the Waves.

In singles play, the Waves won five of six matches. Daniel de Jonge picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Victor Moreno Lozano at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2, William Gleason squared off against Corrado Summaria in a closely-contested match. Summaria, rated No. 69 in the country in the most recent ITA Top 125 Singles poll, won the first set 6-2 but Gleason stormed back to win the second set 7-6 and then defeated Summaria 10-8 in the tiebreaker played in lieu of a third set. Adrian Oetzbach led wire-to-wire at No. 3, defeating Andre Saleh 6-3, 6-3. Zeitvogel parlayed his doubles success into a 6-1, 6-2 win against Albert Sprlak-Puk at No. 4. The No. 5 spot saw a tight match between Enrique Luque Rico and Shunya Maruyama, with Luque Rico emerging victorious, 6-1, 7-6. Patrick Cacciatore and Robert Shelton battled back-and-forth at No. 6, with Shelton winning 5-7, 7-6, (10-6).

The Huskers face a quick turnaround, as they will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on their Big Ten border rival Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday, March 1. Doubles play will get underway at Noon and both live streaming and live stats will be available. Fans can visit the Nebraska men's tennis schedule page for links to watch and/or follow along with the action on Sunday.
