Chesterfield, Mo. - The Nebraska bowling team finished fourth at the Columbia 300 Saints on Sunday.
Nebraska changed its starting rotation on Sunday, going with Allison Morris, Kendyl Hofmeister, Leah Glazer, Cassidy Ray and Raquel Orozco.
Nebraska took on Wisconsin-Whitewater to start bracket play and won 4-0. In the first game, Allison Morris started with a split, but turned it into a spare. Leah Glazer and Cassidy Ray were later able to get back-to-back strikes. Morris started a four-strike streak for the Huskers (Morris, Hofmeister, Glazer, Ray.) NU won the first game 219-193 to claim an early 1-0 lead. In game two, the bowlers only found themselves with a total of three strikes from Hofmeister, Glazer and Orozco, but continued on to earn another victory 199-181 with a 2-0 advantage. Building off the momentum, NU bowled seven strikes in game three to lead them to a big 228-149 victory and a 3-0 lead. Going into game four, NU only needed one more victory. In the first, fourth and sixth frame, the Huskers found strikes and it was just enough to help them to a narrow 181-180 victory to take the game 4-0.
Coming off their win, the Huskers moved on to face Arkansas State. The bowlers kept their momentum rolling in the first game as Ray claimed a strike in the fourth frame and Morris in the sixth. Orozco bowled a strike then followed it up with nine pins and finished with a spare. They fell a bit short however and lost the first game 194-205 to get down 1-0. The second match didn't go as NU wanted it as the Huskers fell 173-194. Strikes were collected by Orozco, Hofmeister and Glazer along the way in the fifth, seventh and eighth frames respectively. Nebraska headed into the third game down 2-0. The team struggled in the third game as they fell 178-204. Glazer bowled a strike in the third frame and Morris followed in the sixth frame. Orozco managed to finish the game with a strike, but it wasn't quite enough to pull the Huskers ahead. NU looked to make a comeback after falling down 3-0, but fell in the fourth game losing 4-0. Orozco finished with two strikes, one in the fifth frame and another to finish the game in the 10th frame. Hofmeister claimed a strike in the seventh frame with Ray doing the same in the ninth.
Nebraska moved forward to the third-place match to face Wisconsin-Whitewater. The first game led to another Husker loss as Wisconsin-Whitewater outscored them 182-214. NU went to the next match and just fell short 195-199, finding themselves down 2-0 for the matchup. NU found a bit of success as Morris (first frame), Ray (fourth frame), Orozco (fifth frame) and Hofmeister (seventh frame) all bowled strikes. However it didn't give them the elevation they needed to win. In the next game, NU bowled nine strikes en route to a 244-183 victory. Estefania Prieto was subbed in for Hofmeister in the seventh frame. It was the first time Prieto bowled this weekend and she bowled a strike immediately. The Huskers now found themselves down 2-1. Game four didn't go well for the Huskers as they fell again 183-192. Morris (first frame) and Glazer (third frame) claimed strikes then Glazer and Ray proceeded to get back-to-back strikes in the eighth and ninth frames. After a slow start in the fifth game, Glazer bowled the first strike of the game in the third set. Orozco, Morris, Prieto and Glazer completed four consecutive strikes through the fifth and eighth frames. Orozco bowled another three strikes to end the game, but Nebraska came up short 201-223, losing 4-1.
The Huskers finished the tournament in fourth place.
Nebraska will bowl again at the Prairie View A&M in Arlington, Texas, Jan. 31- Feb. 2.
