With the spring portion of the 2019-20 season set to begin Jan. 18 at Vanderbilt, the Nebraska men's tennis team is gearing up for Year 2 under Head Coach Sean Maymi. Three players return and seven new players have joined the program since the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.
One of those newcomers in Bradley Mittleman. The 2019-20 campaign marks a return to the Midwest for the Leawood, Kan., native. Mittleman was ranked as the No. 2 player in Kansas coming out of Blue Valley West High School in 2018 and spent his freshman season at Old Dominion. As a true freshman, Mittleman notched a 2-1 singles record and a 1-1 mark in doubles before making the decision to become a Husker. He reflects on his journey to Nebraska and his goals for the upcoming season below:
Describe your journey to Lincoln – how did you end up at Nebraska?
"I grew up and trained in Kansas City with an ATP player from Lincoln and a coach who played for the Huskers. They wear Husker red and continue to support the program, so I have always been interested in attending Nebraska. I spent my first season at ODU (Old Dominion University), [and] while it was a great program, it was not the best place for me to grow as a player and teammate. After meeting Coach Sean [Maymi] and Coach Tom [Boysen], it became clear that Nebraska was the place for me and I would be a lifelong Husker."
What have you enjoyed most during the first few months in the program?
"I have really enjoyed getting to know my teammates and forming a bond with each of them. They are such great guys and we are all working hard together with one goal in mind. It's special to be a part of this team of guys."
Describe your individual goals for the upcoming season.
"I plan to look for ways to improve my game during every practice and match. I plan to rise to the occasion and fight to put wins up on the board for our team."
Describe the team goals you have for the upcoming season.
"Our team goals are to play each match one at a time and put wins on the board. We can't leave anything on the court, we need to fight to the end of each match. We need to believe as a team and work hard to win matches and make the NCAA tournament."
Finish this statement: "In the years to come, Nebraska men's tennis will be…?"
"A team to be reckoned with."
