Lincoln – Nebraska Athletics will host its 5th annual Diversity and Inclusion Summit on January 26th, 2020 for student-athletes, and January 27th, 2020 for staff and coaches. Since 2016, Husker student-athletes, staff and coaches have annually gathered to discuss diversity, practice inclusion and explore multiple identities with one another. The annual summit serves as a reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the Husker experience.
The Summit theme will be "Embracing Everyday Diversity: Moving from Head to Heart." The Summit will place emphasis on the everyday work of embracing diversity and practicing inclusion, featuring Justin Jones-Fosu. Justin Jones-Fosu is an award winning, nationally recognized College Leadership, Diversity, and Student Success Speaker who engages and inspires students with his energy, content, and one of a kind presentations. His message of Moving from Head to Heart, focuses on losing the head/brain knowledge of diversity and inclusion, and instead, focusing on the heart knowledge. Justin aims to influence the audience to become more personally attached to diverse experiences with their feelings, which typically inspires people to be more empathic when personal feelings and experiences are involved. A student-athlete and current staff member will also speak about their current journey to inclusion and how they practice inclusion. Following the Summit, Nebraska Athletics will host a number of diversity and inclusion based programs, including Black History Month programs, Women's History Month programs, and collaborations with the LGBTQA+ Resource Center, The Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, and more.
