On losing four games in a row to Iowa
“We understand the history behind this game coming up and we’re not really thinking about the past. We’re thinking about what we have to do right here in the present what we have to do coming up this week to go out there and play a very good Iowa football team.”
On Iowa’s wide receivers
“Iowa’s up there. I respect those guys, especially going against those guys last year. They showed that they could play football and a great group of guys with a great quarterback that can make all the throws to them and throw them open. As [defensive backs] we respect all those guys.”
On Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley
“He’s a great quarterback. Not good. He’s a great quarterback. Strong arm. Big guy. Big in stature. Has the arm strength to make all the throws. He can make the long throw to the field. Make the quick throws to the boundary. Make the deep throws downfield. Very accurate passer. He’s a great guy.”
After the win
“Winning is a good feeling. Something that can become very addictive. We just want to win every game that we go out there and we play. That’s not always the outcome, especially as of lately but we’re taking strides to be able to become a team that wins consistently. This week we have another opportunity to go out there and try to play a complete football game as a team. Try to play for each other. The seniors - this will be their last time in Memorial Stadium. We want to go out there and play for them and send them out the right way hopefully.”
On defensive back Lamar Jackson
“That’s my brother. Came in at the same time. Different paths between those two but we always have the same goal. After this he’s exhausted all his eligibility. After this there won’t be any more Nebraska football for Lamar Jackson in Memorial Stadium. This one is big for him to go out there and lay it on the line. Give it all he’s got. That’s my guy to the end. That’s a friend for life. A brother to have for life. I know I can call him [and] talk to him about anything. He [can] call me [and] talk [to] me about anything as well as the rest of the seniors in the room. Eric Lee, Reid Karel, and Jeramiah Stovall. All those guys.”
On sticking through these past years
“It’s a certain type of toughness that you have to have. Every guy in that room right now is tough. Every senior on our roster are tough guys. Everyone that’s been here throughout the years [have] been through the ups and the downs. Those are tough guys and we respect them and this is their last dance in Memorial Stadium and we want to send them off the right way.“
On the defense against Maryland
“To me it wasn’t so much about how we played. It was about how we interacted with each other. Just a love that surrounded us. The love that was on the field. The love in the locker room pregame. The love while we were playing. The love after plays. The love on the bench. The love on the plane ride back home. Just the love around me that was filling the room whenever we were all together you could tell that guys really enjoy being around each other. Guys really enjoy playing for each other. That’s really the thing that helped usually around each other was really the love that we have for each other.”
On that picking up last week
“To be honest with you, I don’t know. I just know that that’s a feeling that’s been there. It was very evident that it showed on Saturday.”
On being in this role
I enjoy playing football period whether it’s say D-corner, nickel, dime. I guess I enjoy playing DB. I would enjoy if they put me at linebacker, if they put me at nose. I know that’s unrealistic but I’d enjoy football regardless. That’s just the love I have for the game. Just being there. Growing at the position. Obviously my coaches, they’re part of me being there. I can do it all. I’m just happy when I’m out on the field especially [when] I get a chance to out on the field and wear these colors and wear that N on the side of my helmet every week. I put it on for the state of Nebraska and Nebraska fans all around the world.”
On Iowa
“They [have] great blocking up front. Great running backs. Well-coached guys. All the recipes for success. Having the fundamentals down pat. That’s something that they really harp on over there. Anytime you play a team like that, a good team like that, a fundamentally sound team like that you have to prepare up to that standard.”
On playing closer to the line of scrimmage
“I can’t tell you exactly how many snaps it was. It’s definitely a different game. You’ve got to be really keyed into your job, your assignment. There’s not very much room for error. The good thing is that you’ve got guys around you that are also trying to fly to the ball. You want to do your job right so that way somebody else can come and do it right. A lot of times being down there, just having to do your job the play might not come to you but you’re where you’re supposed to be so that allows somebody else to be where they’re supposed to be. If I can keep doing that and keep helping the defense, that’s fine with me. I like that.”
On this game possibly being the last this season
“We’re not really thinking about that. We’re just going out there and we’re ready to play this game. Game 12 versus a very good Iowa team. We’re just going out there, give it our all. [We’re] not really thinking about past that. We’re not thinking about the past. We’re not thinking about the future. We’re thinking about the right now in the moment.”
