Adrian Martinez
Sophomore, Quarterback

On the process of making a game plan with many guys sick or injured
“We found a way throughout the week, and we translated it on the field. We had a good night, a good win for the team. It was fun for us to be together there on the field.”

On what it is like on the field with a team that considers you a rival
“We’re looking forward to the matchup. It’s a Black Friday game. We’re excited to play them. That’s really all it comes down to. They’ve beaten us the past four times. We’re excited to go out there and have one more game to play.”

On if there is any more chatter on the field against Iowa
“I wouldn’t say it’s anymore than usual.”

On how important it is to win the tempo battle on Friday
“I think it's incredibly important. Just like any game, it’s important to go out there and execute, go out there and do our jobs and play well. I think that’s what it comes down to.”

On what stress it puts on a defense when Martinez and Luke McCaffrey are on the field at the same time
“Luke can do it all. That’s a part of his arsenal. He has shown his threats as a receiver, a quarterback and a runner. I think that’s another part of our offense that can be dangerous.”

On if the opposing defense was making different calls when McCaffrey was playing wide receiver
“Not that I was aware of.”

On how big it is to try to win for the seniors
“The seniors have been through a lot here. I will always be thankful for that group. I know this team will be as well. We are really just focused on this week. We want to do our best each day here and prepare appropriately for Iowa.”

On which senior impacted him the most
“Its hard to point at one guy specifically. They’ve been a great group. They're the guys who have been through a lot at Nebraska and are setting the foundation.”

On what has clicked for the running game these past two weeks
“I think it starts with the offensive line. They’ve done a great job and moving the line of scrimmage and controlling that aspect of the game. That’s something they should be proud of. Dedrick [Mills] has done a good job as well. I’ve stayed consistent in my reads.”

On if he feels better physically
“Yeah, I would say so.”

On how much better he is than a year ago running perimeter option plays
“I would say that I’ve gotten better. It’s something that Coach Verduzco and Coach Frost have put an emphasis on in practice. I’ve learned my way through the course of the year and experience.”

On what Coach Frost has taught him how to run that option well
“It just comes down to running with speed. I think that is the key. The key thing is making that defender make a choice and reacting according and doing it fast and decisive.”

On what makes Iowa's defense successful
“They’re a very solid football team. They’re a very good team. They’ve been good on defense all year. They’re consistent. They don’t make a lot of mistakes, and that is their brand of football.”

On what freshman running back Rahmir Johnson was like before the game on Saturday
“Rahmir is a pretty reserved guy. He’s always calm, cool and collected. I mean that genuinely, That’s how he was on Saturday. He was ready to play, and I was excited that he got an opportunity to score his first career touchdown and take advantage of the reps that he could get.”

On if he cringed when he saw Rahmir spike the ball after his touchdown
“I did, but I noticed that he ran over and picked it up. That was the key part. I think he realized that, and he was excited.”

On if he sees things with this offense that he thinks can carry over to next year
“Of course, but we have to be focused on this season and this upcoming game. Going back to your point, I am very optimistic of where we are at. We need to get better this week and carry what we’ve done the past two weeks.”

On how he balances treating Friday like any other game
“It’s obvious that this is a big week for us. The guys are focused. The team is focused on the day-to-day process. That’s what it's going to take to get it done.”
