KEARNEY, Neb. -- Christian Miller (141) and Bubba Wilson (157) won individual titles at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open on Saturday, highlighting 11 Huskers who competed in the tournament.
Miller pinned Chris Kimball (Concordia) in his first match of the day. The Husker sophomore then recorded a 16-0 technical fall against Chadron State's Joe Ritzen before earning a 4-2 decision against Wesley Dawkins of UNK. In the semifinals, Miller defeated Noah Hermosillo (Adams State) 6-4 to advance to the championship bout, where he bested Augustana's Hunter Burnett 8-3.
Wilson, a redshirt freshman, earned a first-round bye in the 157-pound bracket. He went on to record a major decision (15-3 over Colorado State University - Pueblo's Justin Davis) and two decisions (10-3 over Augustana's Jacob Tvinnereim and 7-6 over Fort Hays State's Anthony Scantlin) before recording a third-period pin in the championship match against UNK's Tyler Cunningham. Wilson's UNK Open title comes on the heels of his runner-up finish at the Daktronics Open on Nov. 17.
Overall, seven Huskers placed sixth or better, including Kevon Davenport (149) and Colton Wolfe (184), who both recorded runner-up finishes. Davenport continues to wrestle well against tournament competition, as his second-place finish comes one week after he won an individual title at the Daktronics Open.
