Two Huskers Finish in Top 15 at Maridoe

Carrollton, TX. ---The Nebraska men's golf team completed play at the Maridoe Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon with a 10th-place team finish and overall three-round score of 919 (+55). SMU won the tournament with a score of 882 (+18).

For the third straight tournament, senior Tanner Owen led the Huskers with a three-round score of 225 (+9), which tied him for 12th, his second straight top-15 finish. Owen shot a 77 (+5) in the first round and a 75 (+3) in the second round before jumping 13 spots with a final-round 73 (+1).

"This week was about short game. I hit the ball better at the Prairie Club, but I averaged about 10 one-putts this week, which helped with my success," Owen said.

Owen hopes to continue his strong play in the Royal Oaks Invitational, the final tournament of the fall season.

"I think it's going to come down to short game and putting. I just need to go out and hit more greens, and if I continue to putt the way I did this weekend, I think the sky's the limit," he said.

Junior Tom Westenberger had his best finish as a Husker, as he also finished in the top-15. He tied for 14th with a three-round, career-best score of 226 (+10).

"I think the main difference was my mental game," Westenberger said when asked about the difference from last week to this week. "I was a lot more disciplined and confident with what shots to hit this tournament. This gives me more confidence to properly prepare my game for higher finishes in tournaments to come," he said.

Junior Branden Meyer shot a first-round 82 (+10) before firing two straight rounds of 76(+4) to finish the tournament with a score of 234 (+18), which tied him for 45th alongside teammate Will Marshall.

Marshall was tied for 7th after firing a first-round 73 (+1) in his first round of collegiate golf. Marshall would finish with a final score of 234 (+18). Junior Mark Foelbaek rounded out the Husker lineup with a 251(+35).

"We were well prepared but didn't pull ourselves out of practice mode until day two and three. We continue to play two good rounds out of three, and that's not good enough at this level," said Head Coach Mark Hankins

"Tanner [Owen] was steady again this week, and Tom [Westenberger] was much improved in a very tough field. Will [Marshall] made his debut and put up a couple good numbers.  I know it's cliche, but we learned a lot this week, and I'm seeing some real effort and awareness from this team," Hankins said.

Nebraska will finish the fall season at the Royal Oaks Invitational in Dallas, Texas, at the Royal Oaks Golf Club on Oct. 21-22.
