Durham, NC. --- The Nebraska men's golf team competed in their first tournament of the season this weekend at the Rod Myers / Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. Nebraska fired rounds of 309-287-300 for a three round total of 896 (+32), which was good for 10th place in the 13-team field featuring seven schools that qualified for last year's NCAA tournament. Wake Forest finished in first place with a three round score of 842 (-22).
"This was an eye-opener for a lot of the team," Head Coach Mark Hankins said, "We needed to compete with more discipline and stick to our game plan throughout the day. We got off to a tough start in the first round and pressed. We battled on Sunday, picked up a couple spots in the field and salvaged what we could from the tournament."
The Huskers were led by senior Tanner Owen, who bounced back from a first round 80 (+8) with a season-low 68 (-4) in the second round and a 74 (+2) on Sunday, giving him a three round score of 222 (+6), which tied him for 34th.
In his first tournament as a Husker, junior Branden Meyer finished just two strokes behind Owen with a 224 (+8). Meyer shot a 78 (+6) in the first round on Saturday morning before shooting a 72 (E) later in the day. Meyer finished Sunday with a 74 (+2), which tied him for 41st overall.
Mark Foelbaek, a junior college transfer from Ranger (Texas) College, finished his first tournament as a Husker with an overall score of 226 (+10), which tied him for 44th place alongside sophomore teammate Caleb Badura. Foelbaek shot a 77 (+5) and a 75 (+3) in the first two rounds before firing a 74 (+2) on Sunday. Badura finished his first round of Division I golf with a 76 (+4) before shooting an even par 72 in the second round. Badura capped things off on Sunday with a 78 (+6). Sophomore Tristan Nelko rounded out the Husker lineup with a three round score of 236 (+20).
"I saw some really good things from our team this week. They weren't happy with their position individually or as a team which will allow us to make a few changes and be more competitive moving forward," Hankins said.
Nebraska will be back in action on Sept. 29-30 when they co-host the Prairie Club Invitational in Valentine, Neb.
