Lincoln, Neb. --- Senior Tanner Owen, junior Daniel Pearson and sophomore Tristan Nelko were recognized on the 2019-20 Big Ten Men's Golfers to Watch List released by the conference on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Owen returns after making a major leap as a junior. The Parkville, Mo. native matched the best Big Ten Tournament finish by a Husker in school history by tying for 16th at the 2019 Big Ten Championships. Overall, Owen recorded five top-25 finishes last season and earned Big Ten Golfer-of-the-Week honors on April 3, 2019 and ended the year with a team-best 72.86 scoring average. The two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection is poised for a sensational senior season.
Pearson returns to the Husker lineup following a sophomore season in which he posted a 74.88 stroke average. The junior from Longmont, Colo., tied for first among Husker golfers at the William H. Tucker Invitational and also competed in the Fighting Irish Classic and Quail Valley Intercollegiate last season. Off the course, Pearson earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, was a member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and was presented with the Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award.
Nelko, who enters his sophomore season, worked hard from the moment he set foot on campus and earned a spot in the starting lineup for each of Nebraska's first two tournaments as a freshman last season. He fired a 235 (+19) at the Duke/Rod Myers Invitational and followed that up with a 233 (+20) at the Cardinal Regional Challenge, including a career-low 72 (+1) in the first round. The 2018 Minnesota Mr. Golf and Minnesota Class AAA Individual State Champion out of Plymouth, Minn., also competed in the Quail Valley Intercollegiate, where he set a career-low 54-hole score with two consecutive rounds of 74 (+2) and a third round score of 225 (+9).
Head Coach Mark Hankins enters his second year as the leader of the men's golf team and will try to improve on last year's program-best fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. Nebraska will begin the season on Sept. 14-15 at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, NC.
