Alex Davis, Outside Linebacker

On what has been the biggest difference this offseason compared to past

“I would honestly say just confidence in my play. I always go hard, always try to do my best, but I would say confidence. Knowing what I can do, knowing how I can affect the ball.”

On what his level of optimism is this season compared to past seasons

“I would just say honestly just seeing myself do it and seeing the work I’ve done in the offseason. Just seeing, actually in spring, seeing myself get better from the work I was putting in. I always go hard, I always want to do my best. In the spring, that’s how I can see myself actually doing it and actually getting better.”

On what his gains were in the weight room

“I definitely feel like I got stronger. Not exact numbers but definitely my explosion. I can feel it when I run, I can feel it when I do movements. I feel faster that’s the biggest thing. I just feel stronger and faster.”

On what it’s like for the outside linebackers seeing their coach (Jovan Dewitt) overcome throat cancer

“It was crazy when we found out that he had that going on, but honestly what I can say about him is that he was always there. Even though he wasn’t always there physically I was still getting messages from him, still talking to him, he was watching practices from home. So even though he wasn’t there physically he was still giving us feedback and some days he would still, like when he would build up the energy to come out to practice. That’s big to see someone going through something like that and still giving 100 percent as much as they can. That’s nothing but a confidence boost. If you’re tired and you look over and you see him just barely being out there, that’s big.”

On Caleb Tannor in his second year

“A lot of times freshman year you’re just trying to learn the ropes and everything. He has a year under his belt and I know he’s more confident in himself. With the strength staff I know he feels a lot stronger and faster. I’m excited to see him play and see how he gets after this year two.”

On his senior year

“It’s your last ride. With me, that’s just something I’m mainly thinking about just being excited and seeing how far I’ve come. Everything. Just learning the game, confidence in myself I’m ready to just… it’s like you said it is a little push knowing it’s my last year, last ride. I’m very excited in myself and I’m looking forward to it.”

On leadership of this year

“It does have that feeling where it’s a lot of people speaking up and that’s good to have. Young guys, I don’t really feel like we’re a type of team to make the younger guys be quiet. It’s everybody is confident, can speak up and I feel like that’s important to have. Young guys can see stuff, too. They’re playing out there, they’re banging around out there on the field too, so they have something to say too. It’s fun to even see them have the confidence to speak up. We encourage that.”

On the linebackers group as a whole

“I feel at linebacker as a whole, I feel great. There’s a lot of experience, there’s a lot of young guys coming in and you can tell they’re hungry. They’re asking a lot of questions. You can tell they really want to be there. That’s the biggest thing, just confidence and seeing they’re hungry. I feel like that’s going to take us a long way.”

On what he took away from the last six games of the season

“Everybody can tell that we turned it around towards around the end of the season and that’s just a building block of what we want to do and want to accomplish this season. We saw what we could do and we’re just building off of that. I don’t think people have seen what we are capable of yet.”

On what he thinks was the big change

“I would say communication and everybody just buying in. That’s the main thing with me. I could see in years prior it was just OK to do the bare minimum and now just even in the offseason, you have guys pushing the next man 100 percent, like I know what you’re capable of and we’re calling each other out on it. If it’s a guy not sprinting through, not going 100 percent we’re calling him out and we’re not taking the bare minimum. We want full effort every play, every down.”
