The Nebraska women’s tennis team hits the road this weekend for their final two regular season matches against Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Huskers and the Golden Gophers are set to compete Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT at the Baseline Tennis Center. The following day, NU travels to the Nielson Tennis Stadium to take on the Wisconsin Badgers.

On April 25, Nebraska is set to host the Big Ten Tennis Tournament at the Dillon Tennis Center, which welcomes the top-ten teams in the conference. The Huskers currently sit at No. 12 in Big Ten standings entering the weekend and will need to win both of their final matches to have a chance to play in the Big Ten Tournament. The top 10 teams in the league standings will earn a bid.

Last Time Out:

Nebraska improved to 2-7 in the Big Ten following a 4-2 win over Iowa on the road. The Huskers were able to claim the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and close out the match with three consecutive singles wins. Junior Hayley Haakenstad stepped up for the Huskers with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Danielle Burich to give NU its fourth point and close out the match.

Scouting Minnesota:

Minnesota enters Saturday’s match with an 11-10 record overall and a 4-5 mark in the Big Ten. In January, the Golden Gophers recorded a 4-1 win over then No. 41 Florida International as well as a 4-3 win over No. 29 Northwestern on April 12.  With only one freshman on the roster, Minnesota returns a lot of talent from the 2018 season, including Tiffany Huber, a junior from Boca Raton, Fla. In 2019, Huber is 11-9 in singles play, including an 11-8 record out of the No. 2 spot. Alongside partner Tina Kreinis, the junior duo is 7-7 at the No. 2 doubles spot.

The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Catrina Thompson, who has been with Minnesota for two seasons. In her collegiate career, Thompson was a three time All-America doubles player at Notre Dame.

Historically, Minnesota leads the series over Nebraska, 14-7. In 2018, the Huskers knocked off the Golden Gophers at the Dillon Tennis Center, 4-3

Scouting Wisconsin:

Wisconsin has made great strides since the 2018 season. With a 15-4 record overall and a 7-2 campaign in the Big Ten. In 2018, Wisconsin went 9-14 overall and 3-8 in the conference, failing to make an appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. The Badgers currently sit in third place in the conference, behind only Michigan and Ohio State.

All six of Wisconsin’s starters are over .500 on the singles court. Wisconsin is led by #74 Sarah Castellano, who is 23-8 overall and 13-4 this season at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. #123 Lexi Keberle is 12-5 at the No. 2 spot while Anna Markova is 14-4 at No. 3. UW's only Big Ten losses are to top 30 teams in Ohio State and Illinois.

Historically, NU holds the series lead over Wisconsin, 8-6. Last season, the Big Red dominated the Badgers at home with a 4-0 triumph.

Huskers Hits:

Claire Reifeis recorded yet another singles victory on Saturday. The junior from Indianapolis, Ind., topped Elise Van Heuvelen in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2. Following the win, Reifeis moves to 17-6 on the season, the best record by any Husker this season. Reifeis is 8-3 from the No. 1 spot and 9-3 out of the No. 2 position.

Vasanti Shinde picked up a dominating win over Sam Mannix of Iowa last Saturday. The senior from Pune, India took down the former Elkhorn South standout 6-4, 6-0. With the win over Iowa, Shinde moves to 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

• Reifeis and doubles partner Jessica Aragon have taken their past five doubles decisions together at the No. 2 spot. They're 11-5 together on the year.

• Junior Hayley Haakenstad has won five out of her last six matches at No. 6 singles for NU.

• A few weeks back, NU announced the signings of Isabel Adrover Gallego and Kristina Novak to national letters of intent. Both are expected to make immediate impacts next season.
