Huskers Host UMD and RU for Senior Weekend

Lincoln, Neb., -- The Nebraska women’s tennis team hosts its final weekend of duals this Friday and Sunday at the Dillon Tennis Center. NU will kick off the weekend with a matchup against Maryland on Friday at 3 p.m. On Sunday, NU will celebrate senior day with a 9 a.m. dual against Rutgers. This will be the last competition at the Dillon Tennis Center until the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament heads into Lincoln on April 25. 

 

Last Time Out:

Nebraska is coming off a 0-2 weekend at the home. Last Friday, NU welcomed Indiana to the Dillon Tennis Center. Despite picking up the doubles point, the Huskers were unable to come out with the win, falling 5-2 to the Hoosiers. 

 

On Sunday, Nebraska faced off against Purdue. Nebraska was able to clinch the doubles point and picked up singles wins from Marina Cozac and Claire Reifeis, but fell just short to the Boilermakers, 4-3. 

 

Huskers Seniors to be Honored:

Prior to Sunday morning’s match against Rutgers, three Husker seniors, Vasanti Shinde, Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould, will be honored in their final home meet at NU.

 

A native of Pune, India, Vasanti Shinde is a four-time member of the scholar-athlete honor roll and a three-time member of the Tom Osborne citizenship team. Earlier this season, Shinde defeated Kansas’ Janet Koch who was ranked #50 at the time. In February, Shinde was ranked #103 in the ITA women’s tennis singles rankings. In her time at Nebraska, Shinde has posted 127 career victories, including 75 wins on the doubles court. 

 

Marina Cozac is a mathematics major from Chicago, Ill., and a three-time member of the scholar-athlete honor roll. Cozac has recorded 37 career wins as a Husker, including 18 singles wins and 19 doubles victories. 

 

The final senior is Elizabeth Gould. The Atlanta, Ga., native is also a three-time member of the scholar-athlete honor roll, a two-time academic All-Big Ten Honoree and was a Big Ten distinguished scholar in 2018. 

 

Scouting Maryland:

The Terrapins head into Lincoln with a 3-12 record and a 1-4 mark in the Big Ten. Maryland has picked up wins over Georgetown and Delaware as well as a Big Ten victory over Rutgers. Senior Millie Stretton has been the top singles player for Maryland this year, going 5-6 overall, including a 3-3 record at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Stretton and sophomore Eva Alexandrova have been the top doubles pair, going 6-7 out of the No. 1 doubles position.

 

Maryland is led by head coach Daria Panova, who took over leadership of the program in 2012. In 2018, the Terps received a No. 9 seed in the Big Ten tournament and defeated Minnesota in the first round, 4-2. In the quarterfinal matchup vs. Northwestern, Maryland was eliminated following a 4-0 loss. 

 

Scouting Rutgers:

The Scarlet Knights are 8-7 on the season and have yet to pick up a win in Big Ten competition, sitting at 0-5. Hilary Ritchie enters her ninth season with the Scarlet Knights and her third as head coach.

 

The Scarlet Knights are a young team with no seniors on the roster. Sophomore Maya Jacobs has had a solid second year for the Scarlet Knights, going 8-7 thus far on the season, including an impressive 6-3 record playing out of the No. 1 singles spot. Tess Fisher and Kat Muzik have been the most consistent doubles pair for RU. This duo is 7-5 together this year, with all of the wins coming out of the No. 1 spot.

 

Husker Hits:

• Junior Claire Reifeis is a team-best 14-6 in singles play this year. She’s 9-3 on the season when playing out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

Jeannie Lozowski and Hayley Haakenstad have taken four of their last seven doubles decisions together at No. 3.

• Senior Marina Cozac has won three out of her last four matches at No. 4 singles for NU.

• Two weeks back, NU announced the signings of Isabel Adrover Gallego and Kristina Novak to national letters of intent. Both are expected to make immediate impacts next season.

 

Up Next:

NU travels to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes next Saturday, April 13. The Huskers will complete their season on the road the week after that with consecutive games at Minnesota (April 20) and Wisconsin (April 21). You can follow the action on Twitter @HuskersWTennis.
