On how Tony Tuioti has been in his short time as his position coach
“Coach T has been good. Just had our first meeting with him, late last Thursday. So I haven’t been around him a ton but just an awesome, awesome energy guy bringing in new techniques and stuff. It’s just good to have a fresh mind with different ideas. Not really huge things, but just tweaks.”
On what sort of improvements he would like to see from the defensive line
“I think a big emphasis for us for the off-season is getting bigger. Just the body change, getting bigger, being able to play harder and just more knock back is definitely something that is big for us up front. Clean up our footwork so we can play more vertically, less horizontally, get more knock back.”
On Coach Frost’s comments on wanting his defensive line bigger and if guys took that to heart
“I’d say me especially. I was the smallest one on our defensive line playing. So yeah, for me especially this off-season was big for me trying to get about 10 pounds on over the off-season. Just to fit in and hold ground better.”
On if he feels comfortable playing at his current weight
“Definitely, last year it was time to put on an excessive amount of weight and it just wasn’t enough time for me to put all the weight on that I needed in that time. I was definitely starting at a better point this year and able to slowly put on a good ten pounds.”
On what he weighs
“288.”
On how tough it is to go through three different position coaches
“You come into college right and you think you’re going to have the same coach for all four years, especially when the staff had just gotten there the year before you got there, you’d never envision that many firings in that few of years of you being there. I kind of look at it as a positive, definitely, just being able to gather and pick the minds of all three of the coaches and several other coaches we’ve had, it’s definitely good to be able to compile all that information.”
On the challenges of having three different position coaches
“Having a coach, they’re going to have things they focus on more, little nuances and little techniques they want you to alter slightly. So that’s definitely been the challenges in the beginning of the season in spring ball adjusting to those small differences they want when you have the other techniques in your mind.”
On having Darrion Daniels on the defensive line for this season
“Darrion has been real good, he’s fit right in with the group. He’s big but he can move well and honestly he can play all three if he wanted to. He’s so big. He brings a maturity and some good knowledge just being able to play the game at a high level, he can add to us and we’re definitely helping him out to learn the defense.”
On what allows him to fit in well with the defense
“Have you met his brother Damion? They’re very similar and they just go at it with each other for sure. The joking personality is how they are off the field.”
On what it’s like having two sets of brothers in the locker room
“It’s definitely a sight to see. If you ever get a chance to sit in a room with them at the same time, I’d encourage it for a once in a life-time experience.”
On if any of the early enrollees stand out
“We’re not with them a lot, they’re kind of coming in to have their own work outs so to say. Wan’Dale (Robinson) was definitely good at practice on Monday, but I didn’t get to see too many of the other guys on the field at the same time. Yeah Wan’Dale hits the hole pretty fast.”
On if Coach Tuioti coming from a 3-4 defense helps
“Definitely. There’s a lot more carryover, the language is universal so he’ll kind of ask us in meetings, ‘what’s your guy’s term for this’ and half the time it’s the same term he uses. That’s been a helpful thing, it’s not a whole new language.”
On what he’s been eating to put on weight
“Strength training is a big part of it. Eating is a constant from morning to night. It’s not too different than what I’ve been doing, just being able to lift more, a lot more in the off-season, a lot more strenuous. It’s helped me versus in season where we don’t get to lift quite as much and quite as heavy so yeah, it’s been good this off-season.”
