Big Ten Wrestling Championships Pre-Seeds Announced

Rosemont, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference released its preliminary seeding for the 2019 Big Ten Wrestling Championships, scheduled for March 9-10 in Minneapolis, Minn. NU is one of six Big Ten teams to have at least nine wrestlers seeded in their weight class. These seeds will be confirmed and finalized in bracket form by league coaches on March 8 prior to the start of the tournament.

The pre-seeds, as voted on by the conference's coaches, rank the top eight wrestlers in three weight classes, along with all 14 starters in seven weight classes due to the Big Ten receiving nine or more NCAA Championships qualifier allocations in those classes.

Nine different Huskers earned pre-seeds for the tournament. Senior Tyler Berger earned the highest seed of the NU participants, as he will be the #2 seed at 157 pounds entering the weekend. Berger finished 4th at last year’s Big Ten Championships. This season, he holds a 22-2 overall record and is 16-1 in dual action. Berger is 8-1 against ranked opponents this season and has won ten bouts by bonus points.

Four other Huskers earned top five seeds in their weight class. Taylor Venz (184) comes in at No. 3 for the 184-pound bracket. Isaiah White (165) and Mikey Labriola (174) are each ranked No. 4 at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Eric Schultz (197) rounds out the group as the No. 5 seed in his class.

Others seeded for NU include redshirt senior Zeke Moisey (#7) at 125 pounds, 133-pounder Jevon Parrish (#13) and 141-pounder Chad Red Jr. (#8). Heavyweight David Jensen ranks as the #7 wrestler in his class according to the pre-seeds.

Jordan Shearer (149) is the only unseeded Husker who will participate in the Big Ten Championships. The redshirt junior from Fargo, N.D. is 6-6 in dual action this season and will be making his first appearance at Big Ten’s.

To qualify automatically for the NCAA Championships from March 21-23 in Pittsburgh, each Husker will have to finish within the threshold listed at his weight. The Big Ten leads the country with 78 of the total 286 automatic bids on the table, with a total conference breakdown below.
