Lubbock, Texas -- Senior Toby Boyer became the seventh-winningest athlete in Nebraska men's tennis history with 70 career wins after defeating #114 Tommy Mylnikov of Texas Tech on Sunday night at The Falls Tennis & Athletic Club in Lubbock, Texas, where the Huskers (7-6, 0-0 Big Ten) fell short to the No. 38 Red Raiders (9-5, 0-0 Big 12), 6-1.
Boyer surpassed four-year letterwinner Marc Hermann, who had 69 wins from 2012-16. Nebraska tennis legend Steven Jung, the Huskers' only All-American and NCAA Tournament runner-up in 1989, leads NU's all-time list with 114 career wins from 1986-89.
Boyer's historic triumph was Nebraska's sole win of a tough match against Texas Tech. The Ham Lake, Minn., native defeated Mylnikov in straight sets, 7-6 (2), 6-2, to advance to a 9-1 record at No. 1 singles. This was Boyer's second win against a ranked opponent this season.
Junior Micah Klousia won the second set of a hard-fought match against #115 Parker Wynn at No. 2 but fell short in three, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Freshman William Gleason had a three-set thriller against Ilgiz Valiev at the No. 3 spot, but also dropped the match, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
Sophomore Isaac Nortey, junior Chris Dean and sophomore Alvaro Moreno Lozano lost in straight sets at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Texas Tech won the doubles team point to close out the 6-1 victory.
