The Nebraska softball team (8-5) travels to Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend for the Colorado State Classic. The Huskers will play five games from Thursday to Sunday. The Big Red start the weekend with a pair of games on Thursday against Idaho State at 11:30 a.m. CT and Colorado State at 4:15 p.m. CT. On Friday the Huskers face Santa Clara at 11:30 a.m. CT. The following day, Nebraska plays Stony Brook at 12:15 p.m. CT. The Huskers conclude the weekend with a game on Sunday against Santa Clara at 12:15 p.m. CT.
Last Time Out
Nebraska went 1-3 at the Mary Nutter Cathedral Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., Feb. 21-23. The Huskers beat BYU, 5-4, in five innings, before dropping the next three games to San Diego State (4-0), No. 13/15 Arizona State (6-5) and No. 2 UCLA (9-1). Tristen Edwards led the Huskers over the weekend going 5-for-11 (.455) with one run and one RBI. Bri Cassidy went 4-for-11 (.364) with three runs.
A Look at the Other Teams
Idaho State enters the weekend with a 5-6 record. Most recently, the Bengals went 3-2 at the UC Davis Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif. Idaho State defeated UTEP, UC Davis and went 1-1 against Saint Mary’s College of California. ISU also dropped one game to Seattle University. As a team, the Bengals are hitting .250. Cassidy Fitzgerald and Haley Harrison are both batting above .400, hitting .421 and .412, respectively.
Colorado State is 9-4 prior coming into the weekend. The Rams are coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Mary Nutter Cathedral Classic. The weekend was highlighted by a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma State. The Rams also beat Bethune-Cookman in a 7-0 shutout and Utah, 6-1. CSU lost to Cal Poly, 2-1. Despite also losing to second-ranked UCLA, the Rams hung with the Bruins, losing just 3-0.
Santa Clara has a 2-10 record heading into the weekend. The Broncos started the season 0-6 before picking up their first win against Army West Point on Feb. 17. Most recently, Santa Clara went 1-4 at the Silicon Valley Classic. The Broncos lost to California State University Bakersfield, Montana and Utah State and went 1-1 against Northern Colorado.
Stony Brook looks to kick off its 2019 season this weekend, after its opening-weekend tournament in Greenville, S.C., was canceled. In 2018, the Seawolfs went 25-22, including 10-7 in conference play. Stony Brook lost seven players from that roster, but bring back a lot of talent in 2019, including its top hitter and pitcher from 2018 Melissa Rahrich.
