Regan Mergele pitched a career-high 7.0 innings against NC State. Regan Mergele recorded a career-best nine strikeouts against the Wolfpack. Samantha Owen made her first start at third base for the Huskers against the Wolfpack on Saturday. Lindsey Walljasper hit her third home run of the season on Saturday. Madi Unzicker was hit by a pitch against NC State, extending her on-base streak to eight games. Lexey Kneib hit an RBI double against the Wolfpack to extend her on-base streak to seven games. |
Raleigh, N.C. - Senior Regan Mergele had a career day in the circle as the Nebraska softball team (6-2) shutout NC State (3-5) on Saturday night by a score of 6-0 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Mergele (1-1) started the game and went the distance, pitching a career-best 7.0 innings. It marked her first complete game as a Cornhusker. Mergele gave up just two hits and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. She also had four walks.
On offense, Bri Cassidy led the Huskers going 2-for-2 with one run, one RBI and one walk, to reach base all three of her times up to bat. Lindsey Walljasper hit her third home run of the season to give the Huskers an added boost on offense. Alyvia Simmons, Samantha Owen and Lexey Kneib also had one hit on the night as the Huskers finished with six hits as a team.
Nebraska scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Simmons drew a leadoff walk to get the inning started. She stole second and reached third on a passed ball. Walljasper struck out swinging at the plate. However the pitch was wild and she advanced to the open base at first, while Simmons scored the Huskers' first run. While NC State was tied up at home with Simmons, Walljasper advanced to second. Cassidy singled to bring in another run. Madi Unzicker was hit by a pitch to put another runner on and Kneib doubled to score Cassidy. After a fly out to center field, NC State threw the ball in to cover home, but an error on the catcher allowed Madi Unzicker to score.
The Huskers loaded the bases in the third after Edwards drew a walk, Owen singled and Cassidy drew a walk. However, the Huskers were unable to score any runs.
In the top of the fifth, NC State threatened after drawing back-to-back walks. However, NU retired the next three batters to keep a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Huskers added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Owen reached on an error. Anni Raley pinch ran for her and Walljasper hit a home run to score two.
