Huskers Defeat Bears, Fall to Mustangs

Dallas, Texas -- The Nebraska men's tennis team (2-3, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the Northern Colorado Bears (2-3, 0-0 Big Sky), 4-0, after losing to the SMU Mustangs (3-2, 0-0 AAC), 5-2 in a doubleheader at the SMU Tennis Complex on Saturday. The Huskers are set for their home debut against UMKC on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. at the Dillon Tennis Center.

Sophomore Isaac Nortey and freshman William Gleason started off the match against the Bears with a 6-2 win over Kyle Pease/Tommy Smalley at the No. 1 spot. Shortly after, freshman Victor Moreno Lozano and junior Micah Klousia beat Adolfo Arroyo/Julian Kenzlers, 6-3 at the No. 2 position to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead.

In singles competition, senior Toby Boyer quickly knocked off Pease at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 5, junior Chris Dean beat Alex Exsted also in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, while freshman Victor Moreno Lozano defeated Arroyo, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 to extend NU's lead to 4-0 and secure the Husker win. Nortey, Gleason and Klousia all held a lead before the match was called.

Earlier on Saturday, SMU clinched the doubles point with a pair of quick wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.

In singles play, Nortey earned his first singles win of the season in a three-set thriller against Michael Smith at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 7-6 (0), 10-4. Junior Micah Klousia later knocked off Roberto Rosales at No. 2, also in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. 

The Mustangs picked up wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to close out the 5-2 victory.
