West Lafayette - Tori Beeler and Autumn Haebig, join Omaha native diver Abigail Knapton as they return to the national spotlight over the weekend when they represented the Huskers in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at the Purdue University Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The ACC/Big Ten Challenge is an opportunity for standout Big Ten and ACC student-athletes to compete against one another. Beeler and Haebig will swim among the likes of Olympians Siobhan Haughey, Tamila Holub and Lilly King. The special event was televised live from the Purdue by the Big Ten Network and streamed live at BTN2Go.com.
The junior from Omaha is coming off of a strong performance in the three-meter dive against Kansas. Knapton pulled in a victory with a score of 362.48, breaking her career best. Knapton was named Big Ten co-diver of the week this past week after breaking the pool record in the three-meter dive at Iowa State with a score of 351.05.
Knapton is the first Husker diver in history to win a pair of first-team All-America awards by capturing her second straight honor on platform in 2018. Knapton took eighth on the platform dive (286.15) to claim first-team All-America honors for the second straight season on the event. She added a 22nd-place finish on the three-meter board (307.60) at nationals to cap another history-making season. She qualified for nationals with career bests on the platform (589.70) and on the one meter (535.85) at the NCAA Zone D Diving competition. At the Big Ten Championships, Knapton took ninth on the three meter, 10th on the platform and 26th on the one meter.
Beeler enters this weekend’s challenge with seven top-five finishes, including two victories. At the 2018 Big Ten Championships, Beeler took 18th and set a career best and a school record in the 200 IM (1:59.02). Beeler continued to improve her performances from the 2017 conference meet by taking 15th in the 200 breast and 16th in the 100 breast. The Missouri native currently holds the Nebraska school record in the 200 IM (1:59.02).
The Wisconsin swimmer is coming off of two victories against Kansas. Haebig competed in the 100 free (51.63) and in the 100 back (56.17). Haebig became the first Husker swimmer to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2013. At the 2018 Big Ten Championships, Haebig set career bests in the 200 free (1:46.22) and 500 free (4:42.69, school record). She added a 10th-place finish in the 100 back. The three-time NCAA qualifier also competed at the USA Winter Nationals compiling two top-10 finishes.
The Nebraska swim team returns to action in Iowa City, Iowa at the Hawkeye Invitational Nov. 15-17.
