NU Finishes Fall Season at Quail Valley

Vero Beach, Fla. – Fall 2018 tournament play has officially ended for the Nebraska men's golf team as they completed the final round of the three-day Quail Valley Intercollegiate this afternoon. NU notched a 54-hole team score of 876 (+12). NU had a team score of 290 (+2) today after shooting a 297 (+9) in the first round and a 289 (+1) in round two.

North Florida took home the tournament title after carding an 834 (-30) over the 54-hole tournament with South Florida (-29) finishing a close second.

Nebraska Head Coach Mark Hankins talked about the positives his team drew from the fall season in his first few months in charge of the Huskers program.

“More than anything, I want these guys to not just accept a poor performance individually or as a team,” Hankins said. “We’re going to get a great opportunity to improve over the next few months, physically, mentally and see who truly commits to a championship mentality going into spring. I’m really proud of Tanner as he showed great toughness today in keeping the pedal down and he continued to make birdies."

Tanner Owen set a new career-best for lowest finish in tournament competition at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. He placed in a tie for 12th after shooting a 212 (-4) over the three-round tournament.

Previously, his top finish was a tie for 14th, which came on April 14, 2018 at the Hawkeye Invitational. Owen sat tied for 49th after the first round but made a big jump in the standings after carding a 68 (-4) and a 69 (-3) in the final two rounds, respectively. This is his second top-25 finish of the season.

Owen talked about what it meant to finish in the top 15 for the second time in his career.

“I’m excited to see all the work I’ve put in pay off,” he said. “I took the positives from the 75 (his first round score) and tried to clean up the rest. I hit my driver really well off the tee and I just let the game come to me. I didn’t really press at all in the last two rounds and it panned out well for me.”

Jace Guthmiller had his best day of the tournament today, carding a 71 (-1). He sat in 64th place after shooting a 75 (+3) in day two, but moved his way up to for 51st place after his outing today. He birdied three times and played relatively mistake-free golf on the way to his second round under par this fall.

Jackson Wendling set a new season-low 54-hole score this week after shooting a 220 (+4). Wendling fired a 72 (E) on day one and followed that up with a 75 (+3) and a 73 (+1) in the final two rounds. The senior birdied five times today, good for second-best on the team.

He talked about what he hopes to bring with him from this tournament as he prepares for the spring season.

“I don’t think I hit the ball to the best of my ability this weekend, but I was making good up and down and making putts,” Wendling said. “My scores were pretty consistent, so if I can match that consistency and eliminate some of the errors, I’m going to be in good shape heading into the spring.”

Tristan Nelko carded a 74 (+2) in each of the first two rounds to compile a 36-hole score of 148 (+4). He finished off the tournament today by shooting a 77 (+5) to end with a three-round score of 225 (+9), a career-best for him.

Daniel Pearson had an up-and-down weekend, shooting a 78 (+6) on Sunday before making a jump in the standings Monday when he fired a 72 (E). Pearson finished off the tournament today by shooting a 77 (+5) to end up in a tie for 67th place.

NU will be back in action to start off the spring season on Feb. 2, as they host the Big Red Alumni Invite in Jacksonville, Fla. TPC at Sawgrass.
