Owen Ties Career-Low as NU Shoots a 289 (+1)

Vero Beach, Fla. - The Nebraska men's golf team has now completed two of the three rounds at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. NU sits in 13th place after posting a team score of 289 (+1) today. The Huskers shot a 297 (+9) in the first round to add up to a two-day total of 586 (+10).

South Florida holds the lead through 36 holes. The Bulls shot a blistering 275 (-13) today to overtake Arkansas State, who led after day one. USF leads the competition by one stroke with a 36-hole score of 558 (-18). North Florida (-17) and Arkansas State (-13) round out the top three.

Jackson Wendling shot a 72 (E) to finish tied for 22nd after the first 18 holes. The Effingham, Ill. native followed that up with a 75 (+3) in round two this afternoon, sliding back to a tie for 44th. He hit two birdies today but was set back by five bogeys. Wendling can still top his season best 54-hole score of 221 if he shoots a 73 (+1) or better in round three tomorrow.

Tristan Nelko has been working on his consistency and it looks to be paying off at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. The freshman carded a 74 (+2) in each of the first two rounds to compile a 36-hole score of 148 (+4). Nelko needs to shoot an 85 (+13) or lower tomorrow to set a new career-low 54-hole score.

Tanner Owen seems to be setting new records each time he steps out onto the course this year. The junior had an up-and-down day one in Vero Beach, Fla., but put himself firmly in contention for a top 25 finish with a stellar performance today.

He tied for second-place in round two after firing a 68 (-4) to rise up the standings and into a tie for 19th place. He made the biggest jump of any golfer in the tournament, moving up 30 spots from where he stood after the first round at 49th place. Owen will be looking for his second consecutive top-25 finish tomorrow.

Jace Guthmiller sits in 64th place after shooting a 75 (+3) in day two at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. The highlight of his round came in the back nine holes, where he birdied two holes and shot for par on five other holes.

Daniel Pearson saw a significant improvement in day two after carding a 78 (+6) in the first round. He hit two birdies and sunk an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. He ended the day with a score of 72 (E) to put himself in a tie for 61st place.

Round three begins tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. as Jace Guthmiller starts the third round off for NU. Make sure to follow along on Twitter @HuskersGolf for updates throughout the day.
