Wendling's Top 25 Finish Highlights Day One in Florida

Vero Beach, Fla. - The Nebraska men's golf team completed day one at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate this afternoon. NU finished tied for 13th place following the first round of three, with one round scheduled for each of the next two days. The Huskers posted a team score of 297 (+9) in the first round at the Par 72, 3,350-yard Quail Valley Golf Club.

Arkansas State holds the lead through 18 holes. The Red Wolves shot a 279 (-9) and each of their five starters scored under par. North Florida (-8) and South Florida (-4) rounded out the top three while Big Ten foe Michigan State (-3) stands in 4th place.

Jackson Wendling shot a 72 (E) to finish tied for 22nd after the first 18 holes. Wendling led all golfers by firing two-under-par on par 3’s today. His score of 72 tied a season-low for the senior.

Tristan Nelko finished second among all NU golfers today and sits tied for 40th overall. The freshman from Wayzata, Minn. carded a 74 (+2). He scored at or below par on 14 of the 18 holes today, which tied him for second among all competitors. Nelko has participated in two of the four tournaments this fall for NU. In each one, he shot his lowest score in the first round. He will look to put together another solid performance tomorrow when he tees off at 7:30 a.m.

Tanner Owen, who tied his career-low 54-hole score of 210 last weekend at the Fighting Irish Classic, finished third among NU golfers today and tied for 49th overall after shooting a 75 (+3). A junior from Parkville, Mo., Owen tied for the team lead today with four birdies. He’s had the lowest score on the team in two of the Huskers four fall tournaments this year. He was set to have the lowest score on the team today but carded a triple bogey on hole 18.

Jace Guthmiller finished tied for 59th after shooting a 76 (+4) in round one. He tied Jackson Wendling for the team lead with four birdies but also had eight bogeys on the day. Guthmiller tees off at 7:10 a.m. tomorrow morning in round two.

Daniel Pearson finished fifth among NU golfers and tied for 69th overall in round one. The sophomore fired a 78 (+6) through the first 18 holes. He sank three birdies but was hurt by a triple bogey on hole 10 and a double bogey on hole 16.
