Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska cross country team wraps up its regular season this weekend. The Huskers will compete at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Illinois on Friday and at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday.
The Bradley Classic will begin at 3:15 p.m. with the women’s 6K. The men’s 8K will follow and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Both races will take place at the Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Illinois.
Last season, the men finished third at the Bradley Classic with 131 points and the women placed 14th with 403 points. Alec Sery is the best returning Husker from last year’s meet, as he placed 41st with a time of 25:36.3. Erika Freyhof is the top returner for the women after finishing 68th and clocking a time of 22:17.3.
After the Bradley Classic on Friday, the Huskers will travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. The Pre-Nationals will serve as a precursor to the National Championships and will consist of two evenly-seeded races per gender, the “Cardinal” and “White” races. Teams not selected for either of the seeded races will participate in the “Grey” race.
Both Nebraska cross country squads will participate in the “White” races at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wisconsin. The women will participate in the 6K at 10:45 a.m. and the men will run in the 8K at 12:15 p.m.
“We have a great group on both sides and they are making themselves into a pretty good Big Ten cross country team,” said Harris. "George Kusche has led the men’s team and Judi Jones and Erika Freyhof have led the women’s team, but we have a good group of competitors that are stepping up all around.”
The Husker men are coming off a third place finish at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational. Kusche paced Nebraska in the 8K and placed fourth with a time of 23:57.95. Kusche has finished in the top five in all three meets this season. Mark Freyhof was the second Husker to cross the finish line and finished ninth, clocking a time of 24:27.91.
The Nebraska women’s squad placed 10th at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational and was led by a 22nd-place finish by Judi Jones. Jones ran a 5K time of 17:34.14. Erika Freyhof earned a time of 17:44.19 and finished 28th. Jones and Freyhof have paced the women’s team in all three meets so far this season.
“Both these meets will help us prepare for the Big Ten Championships and the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals will also help us get ready for the National Championships,” Harris said. “We are able to have nine runners at the Bradley Classic and seven at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. The Wisconsin meet will be one of the most competitive meets we have ran in and the experience at both meets will help us in the coming weeks.”
