Albuquerque, N.M. - The Nebraska men's golf team concluded the final round of competition at the William H. Tucker Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The day began with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. local time. Play ended at 2:30 p.m. local time as the 17 teams competing finished their final 18 holes.
After shooting 297 (+9) as a team in the first round and 300 (+12) in the second round, NU shot a 310 (+22) in the final round. The Huskers ended the tournament in 16th place with a final score of 907 (+43).
“We continue to grow in tough competition and new tournaments,” Nebraska Head Coach Mark Hankins said. “We pressed at times today and I saw some mental mistakes and lack of composure. We were more competitive this week and we need to continue to develop our mentality.”
BYU took home first place after shooting 848 (-16) over three rounds. UNLV (-14) and Pepperdine (-13) round out the top three.
NU’s top performer on day one was sophomore Daniel Pearson, who made his fall debut this weekend. After round one, the Longmont, Colo. native found himself tied for 20th after firing a 73 (+1), which was just two strokes off his career-low for a round, which he set last year. He shot the same score in the second round Friday to finish tied for 32nd.
Pearson finished the tournament by shooting a 77 today, bringing his three-round total to 223 (+7). This 54-hole score set a new career-low for Pearson, as his previous career-low was 224, which he shot in Oct. 2017 at The Jackrabbit.
Tanner Owen ended round one tied for 51st after shooting a 75 (+3). Owen ended his day by firing a 73 (+1) in round two, improving on his first round by two strokes. He finished the day tied for 54th. Owen fired a team-low score of 75 in round three, which tied him with Daniel Pearson’s three-round total of 223 (+7). They tied for 46th overall.
Coach Hankins commented on the play of his top scorers this weekend.
“I thought Daniel and Tanner did a good job of hanging in there and posting three solid rounds each,” Hankins said. “They set the tone for our team as we head home and get ready for a quick turnaround before the Fighting Irish Classic. We will be evaluating our lineup again for next weekend.”
Senior Jace Guthmiller finished round one tied for 20th with Daniel Pearson after shooting a 72 (E). He finished day one tied for 60th after shooting a 78 (+6) in round two. Guthmiller finished out the tournament by sinking three birdies on Saturday, but he finished the round with a score of 81 (+9). He went on to finish tied for 72nd.
Jackson Wendling, another senior for NU, fired a 77 (+5) in round one and a 76 (+4) in round two to put him in a tie for 76th overall after day one. He finished off the tournament on Saturday by shooting a 79 (+7) to tie for 75th.
Sean Song finished off his first tournament appearance of the season by shooting a 79 (+7). The senior from Omaha shot 81 and 82 in the first two rounds, respectively, on Friday. His score of 242 (+26) put him in 99th place on the weekend.
The Huskers will be back home to practice this week before heading off to the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Ind. on Friday. The tournament will consist of two rounds on Sunday, Oct. 7 and one round on Monday, Oct. 8. Warren Golf Club will host the event.
